After May 2000, Life magazine will no longer be printed. The death of Life will bring an end to one of the most incredible photographic records of our time. Time Inc. hopes to develop a Website for Life to showcase photography and articles that are unique to the Life magazine style. I for one will miss it… ~The Death of Life~ The power of the lens reveals Everyman’s Life on the pages From dictator to farmer, it was A pictorial history of the ages Who could forget the images Captured for our delight A sailor kisses in victory An old man loses his last fight A kidnapped child, a teacher of men, A King of ancient domain, Each graced the cover here In Life’s paper windowpane Our life will go on of course But a chronicle will cease to be Pages replaced in time By Internet and TV. The death of Life will cause No great outcry of sorrow But I, for one, will miss Life’s chronicle of tomorrow. **If you've never seen the images of Life magazine, may I suggest you find old copies in used bookstores or your local library. These are some of the greatest photographs of our time.....no one does it better. |

I agree with you Sharon. I too will miss the pages and photo's. Though we are poets and use words to transport poeple, a picture truely says a thousand words. I am saddened that we are losing such a chonical of life. Thankyou for sharing this. |

Well written. Too bad this publication is being discontinued. A life isn't significant except for its impact on other lives. |

Poet D this is perfect...you pay a true tribute to this event and end of an era...one of my most heartfelt memories is laying on the floor with my grandparents looking at this awesome reflection of our world...later as I grew up...I remember being haunted by the images of the Vietnam war...the picutures in those pages always effected the reader. great poem. take care jm |

Sharon, I heard something on this, but I didn't know it was going out of print! That's a shame for sure. Those have to be the most excellent photographs of all time. They did speak, and more than a thousand words. Excellent poem and tribute to Life my friend! |

Speaking of no one does it better, that also applies to you, deVine one, and your ability to create poems that others never think of, from Barbie to Life....to snores. Another one well done! |

I know that the peak of "Life"'s... well, life, was before my time, but I was still affected by it greatly. Although TV and the internet are both great things, it will be a sad day when books and magazenes are replaced. A great tribute... keep up the good work. PoetdeVine~ < !signature-->Thank you for giving me reason to search the confines of the cedar chest for the edition of Life that touched me most. Covers of Life that covered life in photos of the day shall be missed by this miss when they are gone away Always I'll remember the cover that most touched my heart a little boy's salute to the daddy taken away by the bullets of a madman in Texas one dreary November day Chronicle's of life in pictures of life missed more than I can say an epitaph of Life as Life ebbs away ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] [This message has been edited by Marge Tindal (edited 03-18-2000).] |

Poet D, you've written about most of our lives with this wonderful poem about "Life," and I thank you. When I was very young, I married a photojournalist who considered his greatest pieces the ones he did for Life. I can't imagine my "life" without it. Marge, wonderful poem also. Yes, what a cover, what a statement. ~ Claire |

Thank you all for your kind words. It's interesting to see how "Life" has affected us all. I read about this yesterday and it touched me. I have several old magazines saved and a few 'collections'..on of "Life" covers. A piece of Americana is on the way out... sad. |
