Love Through Laced Glass

Someone knockedā€¦
The stairs were not carpeted,
the pattern
her tapping feet made
was as familiar as the cadence
of her voice.

Through the laced glass
she saw a man silhouetted
in slender strength
looking,  looking
towards the red rock sunset
which melted
like crayons left
in hot summer sun.

She opened the door
and heard his voice,
tender from a dream
she had forgotten,
and saw his eyes smile
brown and direct
from skin like a rice paper map.

She could feel the fingertip
fragile touch to trace
each line to its beginning
in her glancing.

Her frolicking hair
was in her eyes,
and she tucked loose strands,
as if importance curled
her identity into a wisp
that flew into his space
and made her feelings visible.

His hands were big
with calluses nestled
into the curve of his palm
as he drank coffee
from her dear china cup.

He looked
at the worn glass,
dusty with buried days,
and a marble,
colored like bright fish
and a pickle jar
of burnt orange sand
she had set on the counter.

He seemed to understand,
and the sweetness that came
toward her in the kitchen
as the sun fell into time
was as familiar
as the pattern
her tapping feet made
on the stairs.

Oh Martie!  This is so beautiful!  You portrayed "that silent understanding" so perfectly!   (And speaking of perfect, it FLOWED like coffee into a cup!  Presentation? Perfect as china!)  {Serenity exits, grinning.)

Lots of splendid lines in this one. I assume it's her father? I read this in different ways. Perhaps you would fill me in.
You are a wonder
Love ya

Serenity--thank you for understanding the meaning of two souls meeting who already know each other and the sweet comments.

Liz--It could be her father, brother or soul mate...it's fiction...so you can finish the scene...and you are the wonder!! love you too

Denise--I'm so glad you could picture this...and enjoyed it.

Familiarity of meeting one who
you just know you've known before ...
lovely image-laced work my friend.

Aw, you're not such a big deal. Anyone with the talent of six poets, a mind that would put Solomon to shame, a heart the size of Texas and the four surrounding states and a brain that would make Einstein look like Forrest Gump could do just as well....almost.

Nan--thank you for the lovely comment.

Marge--that was my favorite part too--

Corrinne--I really enjoy your poetry, thank you.

Balladeer--St Patrick's Day is over, and you still have all that left over blarney...well you can give it to me anytime.  You are so sweet!

There's a popular saying that familiarity breeds contempt... your poem is testament that with love it can also breed contentment. This is beautiful, Martie.
