An Avalanche of Love Bitter were the feelings Held so deep within Of a father who mistreated him Whose love he could not win His efforts never recognized His failures overblown So hungry was his tender heart For the love he'd never known Never a word of comfort Or affection did he hear So the bitterness inside of him Just grew from year to year He moved away and married And raised a family of his own Then one day he received Some very sad news from his home So far away he never had A chance to say goodbye And asked in sorrow why it was His father had to die The bitterness then diappeared The pain he'd spoken of And suddenly to his surprise He was overcome with love For the first time in his life He came to realize How much he loved the father Who was so distant in his eyes But still he felt void of love And refused to even see All the love surrounding him In peaceful harmony He was blind to the affection His children felt for him So burdened was he with The childhood memories kept within And through the years he often said That in his hour of death No one would be there to watch him Take his final breath No words, no consolation Could wrest him from this view So hard it was for him to feel A love he never knew Then came a rude awakening A time to see the truth To witness all the love that had Been absent in his youth An illness took him by surprise And threatened his own life And at his bedside stood His loving children and his wife Prayers poured in from 'round the world Love and hugs and tears And loving words from those Whom he'd mistrusted all those years Then finally he admitted What he was thinking of That his loneliness had turned Into an avalanche of love Elizabeth Santos [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Santos (edited 02-10-2000).] |

Liz~ I'm crying now! ( big boo hoo's) This is so moving. I thank God I have a Super Dad. He didn't from what I can get from the family, and I guess his mom was no picnic either. I'm lucky, my Dad saw the mistakes and wouldn't repeat them. Excellent poem.-SEA |

Liz - this is a terrific poem, with a really deep message, and a warning for all of us who get caught in a cycle of denial. Thanks for taking the time to sound a wake up call. You do so well at reaching in taking hold of a person's thoughts. Its an honor to post with you. |

Isn't it sad that we sometimes hold back love for others because of bitterness, pride, or selfishness. Only, to discover that when all that really matters in this world is the love we have and how badly the one's we love need to have that love shared. Your poem should be in the library of required reading. It holds an important meaning for all of us. DH |

Elizabeth: Oh my...love costs nothing and yet I believe it's something that gives so much pleasure, makes such a difference to someone's life....well done, superb! I'm sorry to know that some of you have experienced this same thing. Obviously, the poem is about my husband. It is sad to bear a weight that is irrelevant to your present situation, and affecting all of those around you. hank you all for you responses. Again, it saddens me to know when somebody has been through this. Lngjhn, danny and Rainbow, you explained it so well. Liz [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Santos (edited 02-10-2000).] |

Liz - The sentiments here are so universally true... It's nice to see them so eloquently spoken - If we can just understand in our own hearts that our parents are as human as we, and only capable of being who they are - we can learn to forgive their shortcomings and simply love them... Nicely done, my friend.. |

Oh Liz, this poem is so....undescribable. How well you express the way of this vicious cycle. May Tony ever continue to feel an avalanche of love. Love and hugs, Lizzie "Poetry is the true expression of my soul, it is my ultimate means of communication. It is my rainbow of delight." |
