Long ago twas written
when the books of time were made
these things on which
the foundation of our history was laid.

In a far and distant land
across the great seas
a knight was born
to misery.

Darkness was his companion
his ever present company
he could never find the light
life was such agony.

Alas on this our homeland
a maiden was also born
she too knew the darkness
so alone and forlorn.

It was prophecized the two
would one day meet
he'd slay a dragon
at the maidens feet

"Dark shall meet dark
and cause a spark of light
that never will grow dim
will only grow more bright"

As was fortold
one day their paths crossed
out in a wooded glade
where she had become lost.

She was trapped in the corner
by a vile ugly beast
he felled it with his sword
and the fates were released.

The wind began to blow
and soothe their battered souls
and whispered to them secrets
of what the prophecy fortold

"Dark shall meet dark
and cause a spark of light
that never will grow dim
will only grow more bright"

One would surely think
the battle had been won
but rest assured my child
the story's not yet done...

The two darkened souls
felt an immediate bond
and of each other
they grew quite fond.

But they had erected walls
to block out their pain
and though they were trying to trust
these walls still remained.

He would do anything
Would walk the extra mile
whatever it took
to make his maiden smile.

And the same held
true for her too
for her knight there was
nothing she wouldn't do.

But still there were doubts
wondering "why"
and in the darkness
you could hear their souls cry.

The kinght grew unsure
ho could not stay
so under the cover of night
he quietly slipped away.

The maiden was heartbroken
yet she never gave up hope
clinging to his memory
so that she could somehow cope.

The knight traveled
across great many lands
but could not forget
the gentle touch of his maidens hand.

The wind still whispered
its prophetic litany
and reassured their souls
this is the way it would be.

"Dark shall meet dark
and cause a spark of light
that never will grow dim
will only grow more bright"

At night he was haunted
by his maidens face
he needed to see her again this
decided he set off at a deadly pace.

He went to the glade
but found her not there
his heart grew heavy
maybe she didnt care.

Just then in the silence
he heard a womans scream
he quickly withdrew his sword
moving as if in a dream.

He went through the forest
and over the hill
and there lay his maiden
so deathly still.

He ran towards her but
was stopped in his tracks
a dragon appeared
and began to attack.

The dragon roared
his voice the deamons of hell
a sound so horrifying
yet the knight knew it well.

A battle ensued
blood was shed
but in the end
the knight had the dragons head.

He placed it at the feet
of his maiden so fair
and knelt to stroke a lock
of her golden hair.

A tear left his eye
and traveled down his face
suddenly things grew quiet
and his heart began to race.

The wind began to whisper furiously
you can't give up, you can't
and the forest was filled with
the unrelenting chant.

"Dark shall meet dark
and cause a spark of light
that never will grow dim
will only grow more bright"

The maidens eyes began to flutter
her chest to rise and fall
thsi must be a miracle
she was not dead at all.

She looked into her knights eyes
and saw love shining there
she whispered "I love you -
don't be afraid to care"

They stared into each others eyes
and the walls came tumbling down
the forest had grown silent
once again not even a sound.

He bent to kiss her forhead
and was blinded by a light
that seemed to pulse and radiate
and only grow more bright.

Out of this apperation
a sage did appear
and bid them silently
come closer come near.

As they stepped closer
he said "Be not afraid-
I wish to share with you
this light yu have made"

He took all the tears
they had ever shed
and erased every sad thought
from their heads.

He stretched his closed fist
to the dark night sky
slowly unclasped his hand
and they began to fly.

They landed in the sky and
began to twinkle with such light
and that my child is how we got
the beautiful stars at night.

This piece grew so long that I had to re-read it! You should write stories because I trully enjoyed yours, it had a nice twist to it. Keep up the nice work.

Thanks Mystery ... I've tried the story thing but I lose interest so fast either that or my brain starts working overtime trying to fit in all different kinds of plots and twists and turns and I end up with a jumbled heap !!

Ahhhh you found my secret soft spot..knights and dragons and princesses and fantasy.

I loved reading this, and the tale of two soul mates destined to be was lovely!

and the ending of the stars in the sky -
perfection!

Thanks Starr Gazer for posting this

As we wind up our month of epic poetry, I had to bring this wonderful work up... front and center... You've written a dazzling tale, StarrGazer - and I certainly believe that this is where stars come from... I enjoyed this read very much..

I hope we don't disappoint you when we take on something a little lighter for our next round...
