Spoils of The Sea The first to greet his maritime fleet Was a lady to savor the poet’s feat Beckoned from afar To her lighthouse tower He set a course for her safe retreat He knocked on a locked bulky door Of the castle on that distant shore And waited to hear Her footstep near And the wooden door to swing ajar She let him in, and welcomed him With a smile that came from within To the dining room In view of the moon She led this hungry man of kin Full with grace and manner fine Ready for him who’s come to dine She served her dish With love and wish And the guest felt zestful by her wine She baked him tasty shoo fly pie Where the words mixed in, were never dry The man ate all And the crumbs to fall He picked those up and raised them high He gave her something good to eat Which her palate deemed to be neat The treat tasted great From his sailor’s plate But it was really because her tongue was sweet And the gift he brought her from the sea She opted to ponder carefully But it does so seem She likes the seams Of the spun silk spoils of Barbarie Captain |
