THE FEEL OF A RUG UNDER BARE FEET

I feel the rug under my bare feet
But it doesn't feel like much.
Why don't I feel titillated
At this nether sensation?
I move to a more rugulous rug
With even less glandular reaction.
I begin to worry.
Am I some sort of rug-eunuch,
Not impotent but impedant?
Why can't I shag some emotion,
Get a rise from the rise?
The hell with it, I say,
And throwing on my coat,
I run outside to dance
In ten-degree weather,
In my own back yard,
My feet painfully slapping
On prickly frozen leaves,
On frigid clumps of dead grass,
On icy clods of earth,
And for the few moments I can take it
Before sanity draws me back in,
My feet are hilariously happy.

There are few more pleasures to be found in life
than coming in from the cold of night,
removing boots and gloves and wraps,
and finding a fragrant fire, perhaps,
and treading a thick and yielding rug
across glowing room to a welcome hug.

Loved your poem...especially the "hilariously happy feet" line.

You got it, Hoot Owl!  At this rate, I shouldn't run out of material for another 25 years.

Funny, did you get it from the book 14,000 things to be happy about?  I have a copy, I go thru and underline things when I get to feeling down.  Love the book.

Yep, Kelly, "14,000 things to be happy about," by Barbara Ann Kipfer, Workman Publishing.  It's a fun book, and I won't mind if others help to mine the happiness in it for poems.  Another being posted in a few minutes.
