In Loving Memory of a friends step-dad who died a year ago this week.

He was your step-dad and had passed away.
That weekend you spent traveling home.
You would travel straight through the day.
When you got there, would call me on the phone.

I was ready for the call, the phone rang, you sounded alone.
Though the moment was a solemn one,
The sound of your voice said it all, you were glad to be "home".
And there were arrangements that had to be done.

The office work couldn't wait, we functioned as part of a team.
We worked as fast as we were able.
I needed you and you needed me.
A part of each others lives, suspended by a telephone cable.

When you came back you gave me his obit and said "He took care of her" (your mom), these words were to be.
And this tribute to him, I'll never forget.
Because I knew his step-son, and the hero he was to me.
In an instant I knew him like we had met.

In memory of Walter B. Hood
Born: April 13, 1913, died Jan. 15, 1999.

Hi, Gemini.

I definitely don't want to belittle your tribute -- in fact I always think it's wonderful when artists make their art for other people, not just themselves. One thing though... the poem left me wanting to know more about Walter. You say in the end that knowing his step-son is just like knowing him, but I'm not even clear on your relationship with the step-son. If you could just give some images ... some concrete feelings and situations and times together -- anything like that, I think this poem would speak universally to those who have lost someone. But either way, it's a thoughtful, unselfish tribute.

Thanks for sharing,

Mike

Bsquirrel:
Thank you for your comments.  I wrote this and poured out over "feelings", the thoughts I admit were a bit "choppy".  I guess this will not be known as one of my better pieces.

A wonderful tribute. Friends like you are priceless! I could feel the powerful emotions in this! I also thought that was a great obit piece as well. 'He took care of her'  Kind of says it all, don't you think?
