( I wish to appologize in advance for this my 3 Am ramblings...not sure I can even lable it a poem. This is probably the reason I never watch the news and very rarely read the paper)

Slaughtered Innocence

Sixteen children were buried today,
Laid out in ivory caskets,
As people walked by, paying their respects; while
Uptown, another child died and
Gunfire filled the air.
Hundreds of babies died today,
Taken from the womb before they
Ever took their first breath; while
Rape, abuse and neglect took hundreds more.
Evening shadows fall in silent graveyards, where
Dozens of tiny crosses stand in testament.

Innocence is lost, slaughtered, as
Nations fail to hear their silent cries.
Nameless faces are soon forgotten by many as,
On the evening news, another dead
Child takes their place.
Emergency rooms are painted red with their blood and the
Numbers escalate each day; while upstairs another
Child, our future, is born;
Entering this world with cries as I, with tears, pray for change.

When you truly know the meaning
of the word Love,
you will also know the meaning
of the word Pain

This is why I rarely watch the evening news. I am not up on world affairs because it is generally depressing. I have enough sadness to deal with in my daily life.

Great writing as always my friend.

Hoot,
A wise owl that hoots this poem
It is a fitting epitome.
Sad but true,
And little we can do.

Ruth, This is excellent, I don't think it is at all rambling, but heartfelt and well thought out. Your talent shines wherever, and however your words come together.

Marilyn, Seymore and Lost Dreamer...I almost deleted this several times after posting...It's depressing and I truly know it is , but I also feel it says a message that needs to be heard. Again, sorry about the dark side of this...hopefully we all can do something to change that.
Thanks

I can feel your distress as you wrote this hoot, so sad that this is true and that so many people close their eyes.

What Martie says is so true!

It is in the very closing of our eyes that the tragedy is allowed to grow! As poets, artists, writers, feelers, thinkers, educators, lovers, and parents, do we not, indeed, hold the responsibility to initiate the beginning of a safer world in this, the new century?

Painfully accurate poem, Hoot Owl. Thank you.

Very nice, Hoot.
The hope is in the line ...

'while upstairs another
Child, our future, is born'

We all see and hear the violence ...
we all cry the tears.  We all have to
pray for the future.

It's so painful to realize that our world turns a cheek to these horrible scenes, I must admit I don't keep up on the news myself. This poem might be sad, but the sadder side is that it's the truth.  You have a big heart dear!!!

Don't you dare delete the truth
you know better Ruth
So more we know so more we prevent
And thanks to God on people like you, we will depend
Depend....to open our eyes...to dare
For a better world perhaps one day we all can share.

This tear-jerker worked on me Ruth.

Hoot,
This is sad indeed, but the situation in certain other places is a hundred fold the severity as here in this country. I am saddened at the reality of it all, and that reality is well depicted in your poem. This is not only well written, it is a truth that should not be deleted

Thank you everyone for your response to this piece. I now it's tragic and very depressing, but more will be done if we open our eyes to the fact than if we close them. I only wish to open a few eyes. Thank you for reading and responding.

Claire...thank you very much!!!

Hoot... I care, and I cry. I am just one, but out of one can come two, and out of two, four, etc. If we would only see that the number one has the potential to become a thousand. Thank you for such a loving heart, and thanks for sharing this. (((HUGS)))

Ramblings?? Hardly...This is the sad truth of life.
Let us all wish one another the strength and courage to fight...every way we can..one day at a time.
The sadness and despair was vivid. Thanks for the read my friend.

I think that the saddest thing would be to delete it....as then it could not be shared with all those around us to keep us aware of the changes needed in our world...I for one am glad you were here to bring about an open eye to us all...Thank you Ruth.  We all need someone to help us see what is there sometimes   < !signature-->
