Sliver of Blue Plowed winter soil of the San Joaquin Valley, portrait of symmetry in hues of brown. The eye follows rows of dormant grapevines, boughs of weeping rust clinging to vines. To the west, dry hills rise to dusty skies, and ashen acres mark summer brush fires. Endless road bisects almond trees, Few people, a desolate place, only farmers, migrant workers, and black and white cow faces, in that sparse dotting of Tamarisks, shelter from the sun and ceaseless gusts. Frequently fatal fog collects chains of car collisions. The California Aqueduct parallels this road, Cattle Egret have found new winter homes, stark white against a sliver of blue. Tapped to irrigate crops suited for wetter climes, carrying the liquid of life southward To L.A. and beyond, where water is gold. © 1999 Corinne Bailey |

Corinne This was a terrific picture of the California I remeber. You have such a remarkable palette (I like your peekshure, too). I normally stray away from free verse because I have trouble keeping the flow. Not so with your work. |

I think I'm glad to be living here in California, because I read your poem, and thought "oh I know where that is" Good free verse hun! Open arms can be the most fragile in the world... |

Thank you, all! I've driven this road from Northern California to the Southern tip many times, and the one thing that always occurs to me is that you can't go anywhere in California without the subject of water coming up, usually in hot debate. Northern California and Colorado provide water to Southern California, fact that Northerners love to point out. I am originally from Southern California, so I see it from both perspectives. The people in the north rally together in times of draught and do their part, while the people in the south just pay more and keep using more water (or so sayeth the northerners!). It's true that Northern and Southern California are as different as night and day, but I love both. And when this state seems like it has lost its magic because of overcrowding, there always places to explore that are free from crowds, like along this route of highway 5. Thanks again! Your kind words of encouragement mean more to me than you know! Corinne |

Well living in southern California, and hating California (except for San Fran. and San Diego) I really dont care, but I probably have to agree with the northerners about the water thing LoL, at least in my valley cause all those darn rich snobs and grrrrrr don't get me started. Anyway, getting back to the poem, I like it a lot!! ~*~ ^i^ ~*~ Love is such a lonely art, and death is but a taste. Minds are merely instruments that often go to waste! ~*~ ^i^ ~*~ |
