SERPENT IN THE GARDEN

Once a beautiful garden of flowers
Streamed in brilliance strewn toward the sky.
Whereby enchanted mystical powers
Captivated the common eye.
The flowers grew strong, roots interwoven,
Marigolds, Daisies, Poppies too.
Sunshine's splendor had seemingly chosen
To mist the flowers with heaven's dew.

Growing magically, an owner's delight,
Soon the garden beckoned more care.
So was given to a soul of pure white
Duties of the garden to share.
With visions of radiance all aglow
The fair maiden, quick to abide,
Nurtured with love every flower to grow,
Tended to the garden with pride.

But lured by Beauty, by fascination,
Slithering slow, beneath the soil,
The hiss and the kiss of usurpation
Set forth to lay the garden spoil.
Blinded by the light, confined to the Dark,
Contaminating the essence of earth.
Intending for all to relish his mark,
Sprouting weeds were given their birth.

Choking, polluting the flowers that be.
Some uprooted from the dissension.
While the Serpent whisked away his quarry
To one's infernal dimension.
Yet the garden tender was not alarmed,
Seeking true beauty in all things.
Thus by this, the very Serpent was charmed
All flowers, to him, now offerings.

Now, the Garden's owner has one true friend,
One known from the garden's first day.
Who has seen the Serpent slyly extend
To precious, young flowers this way.
Now he's standing at the gate, looking in,
Pleading with the tender to see...
At what price in finding beauty within,
Are we holding back with the key?

Remarkable talent you have young man, and to think you're all mine!  **sigh

This piece truly shows your talent shining through and through!  What a fabulous read, and I can see the moral/story shining through too!  What a way you have with getting your point across - poetically!  I applaude you for your storytelling....so sad but true.  You are nothing short of brilliant mi-Lord!     I love you....

Why is it so that everything beautiful seems destined to destruction?

Poignant and beautiful, Michael!

Thank you all for the kind replies.

Femme, definately ALL yours...LOL
I know you understand completely.

Nan, sure could use some of the sun's warmth right now.

Meadowmuse, TY, that was indded challenging to try to do throughout the entire poem.

Corrine, I sure wish I had an answer to that...it seems someone is always trying to tear down what others try so hard to build.

Christopher, No doubt you're right there.

Balladeer, I certainly hope so.

Heart breaking verse this is and doubly so for the Keeper of the garden did not forgive the serpent bespelled by beauty. 'Tis masterful work.

BTW, what is it about snakes that inspires such fear and revulsion?

A serpent in the garden,
A snake in the grass,
I can surely relate,
I guess I've been an asp.

Slithering through,
The garden of rhyme,
I've done something rude,
To your love of all time?

I've always tried,
to be silly and such,
Never meaning to hurt,
But I've obviously touched,

A sensitive place,
With one you love so,
And I feel so badly,
That I should just go.

Your gal is a fox,
A talented one,
So smart and so sweet,
And a load of fun.

Don't know what I said,
Never meant to offend,
But I guess I've done something,
To your dear Poet Femme.

I wish you the best,
Hope the best for you both,
With kindest regards,
The idiot Toe!

When I read a really good poem, I sigh, just like I just ate a really good meal, or had some really good...um, dessert.

Just wanted to let ya know, that this gave me that same sense.

Beautiful Mike!
