Givers of Light (My own challenge)

Just as a candle loses wax when it burns in the night
     Must we too lose a part of ourselves when we give to others?
Must part of us be taken when another leaves our sight?
     Who gives back to us?
          Or are we to be like the candle,
          Burned out after each problem that we handle
     Until there's nothing left but dust?

But, like angels, we are called by a higher power
     To be beacons of light shining in the darkness
To offer safe harbor to others in every storm and shower
     They give back to us.
          When we see their sails fixed, new map in hand when they leave.
          We give them the strength to face life again and believe.
     This is our calling, we do it because we must.

Following the example of one who gave His life to be our light.
