“Hey, kid! You got a minute”? The old man called to me. I figured him for sixty- And I was twenty three. “I seen you pay your entries- But I bet you didn’t know- A wore out puncher like myself Once rode the rodeo.” “You know? I started early- A kid just turned sixteen.. They all said I had promise But agreed that I was green” I rode them all that summer- They started makin’ book.. That I would be World Champion An’ about how long it took. Bad luck and sorry hosses- Didn’t help a thing- But up there in the saddle They said I was the King. I drew good up in Cheyenne- And, boy, I took it all- But I met a young “can-chaser” I was riding for a fall. I booked so I’d be near her- I promised her the moon. I’d plans for double-harness, And that to come real soon... She left me for a roper... At the show in San Antone- I knew my string was ended, But the shows went on and on. The bottle I was hittin’ Begin to take it’s toll... The pot became expensive- And I knew I had to fold. That’s been a lot of years now- But one thing I have learned... Don’t find your girls at rodeos Or, friend, you’ll sure get burned. So ride high, wide, and handsome Each time you try for eight... Make sure the only love you have- Is comin’ out the gate”.. . Riding for "eight" is what we all do in one form or another. For some they get a prize and others settle for another day without a bruise. Enjoy all your writing. DH |
