In great disgrace with bitter grief
The widow stands with such relief
The burden done the bell has tolled
She fights, to keep control
Her head hung low with humility
For no one  on this earth to see
Yet the shame she knows, she can not hide
The scars she wares of his pride
On drunken nights when  he came home
And woke the house with fists of stone
He left his anger in her bones
With broken lips he took her pride
To stand with nothing left inside
A mindless zombie she'd become
With his rage and the smell of rum
The humiliation she endured
Painful scars of his words
They kept her trapped with in his tomb
Of violent love and bloody moons
Locked inside his bitter hate,
there was  no way to escape
Is all she knew, no more no less
a victim of love, possessed
On the morning he did not awake,
she went to see why he was late
And found him laying on his side
she knew at once he had died
Tears fell out like pouring rain,
she knew she'd never hurt again
And silently she stood as the earth fell down,
as they lowered his body into the ground
She lifted her head for all to see
She smiles, for at last she's free

Very powerful piece, Tori. I can understand her relief. Very sad that so many people have to live this kind of existence. Well done!

Whoa.....powerful, indeed.  I don't understand why...WHY does this happen?  It takes a strong person to stay....a stronger one to leave.

Profound words here, Tori.

Great poem, tori... Unfortunately, too many wait for death to provide their release from the hell they're living in... and they end up being the one put in the grave.

Hi Tori the line touched me "the widow stands with great relief" and I can understand your feeling of relief to finally be free of such a great burden.    It is such a sorrowful thing that people find themselves stuck in this cycle of pain and abuse.  I too smile with you that you are now free yet it is sad that you have so many ugly memories to remember.  I hope many new blessings and joy will replace your sadness.   This poem was very beautifully written...such a nice smooth flow.  Take care, James

Tori, this was really strong! A message of abuse, and you've described it well!  How one feels when they're in it. Very sad, if only all would realize that they are worth more than that, and there is always a way out.

Excellent, but so very truthfully sad!

Oh my, this one really spoke strongly to me. I at one time wished for this to happen, me who would not hurt a fly...it's a hard situation to be in.

I've seen a lot of this working at the local womens shelter Dove.. it takes a strong person to endure and even stronger one to exit but so many wait till one of them is gone..

Ruth, you were not alone "She Smiles" is what so many of them have waited and wished for.... until they find their way..
