A Smile

that masque
so much
like the one I wear
   It smiles differently
yet,
remains the same

you,
-like I-
cover
   your completeness
portray...
     A world different
-from that which lies within

for to the eyes of others,
the beauty within
   must surely match
the beauty without

“simple,” you say
...if only...
   in your complexity

from behind
coquettish eyes
green in emerald hue
   you smile with soft lips
to share with them
a laughter
they share with you

for you they give
true to themselves
they show,
they love,
propelled to new heights
   you inspire them to reach

and then for me,
you try the same
   hide behind
a heart of iron-bound
   knowing
   hoping
   knowing all the while
the futility
of the facade

because I see
the ray of beautiful you
which shines
   through
a sliver of truth
slicing between
   the darkness of your depths

and finally
   you smile
smile from your eyes
   a smile few see
a smile,
none but I can know.

My eyes are smiling , but not my mouth, for it is open, gasping at the perfection of this poem.

Wow...lookie what we have here!     Quite a gem, m'friend...you have a tender side, whodathunkit?!  lol  This is absolutely lovely, Chris.

Then I'll be drinking from the saucer 'cause my cup has overflowed.

...and here we go with those masques again ... methinks there will be quite a collection!

When someone smiles, I always look to the eyes to tell if it is real.  Well put, my friend -- you have portrayed well the difference between a smile and a smile.

Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are coral made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange...

With a poem this good, one can only sit back, smile and appreciate....which I am doing.

This is the first glimpse I've gotten of your poetry and WOW!  I really enjoyed this, and a true smile can definetly be seen in the eyes, like mine
