"The Earth Movers" [looking out the window] All’s quiet now--a stillness in the air, But there’s something ominous in that calm that makes me ill-at-ease. It would seem so very peaceful, except for that constant breeze-- A soft hum-like sound, as if a swarm of agitated bees. Louder, louder, closer it gets, now it’s starting to frighten me. A thumping, pumping, pounding sound, reverberating through my chest. It must be coming from outside, that unearthly, Godless guest. [picking up the phone] I see something coming now, moving slowly towards me, Knocking down concrete walls and uprooting giant trees. Giant metal monster machines, moving down the street. Marching to the rhythm of ten-thousand angry feet. Persistently progressing, never stopping to rest, The relentless metal monster machines are resistant to arrest. Jaws of steel, teeth of iron, ripping at Mother Earth’s bared breasts. That grinding, driving, drilling sound, digging up the ground. Yes, it’s really happening now--please, take this down-- The mighty, titan Earth Movers have finally come to town. _____ ~Gene~ "It often comes to me at night When lights are dim And thoughts are bright. As I ponder what to write, Take pen in hand And with it make My words appear as no mistake. Guided by a force unknown, I create a new And wondrous poem." ~Gene~ |
