Beagle They brought him in, a baby Beagle full of puppy charms Who wouldn't welcome such a puppy home with open arms? So funny were his floppy ears, so endearing were his eyes So deceived, I didn't recognize the devil in diguise We couldn't think what to call him, so "Beagle" was his name Sometimes we called him "trouble" and he'd answer just the same. Training was impossible, the idea of it didn't sell But after just a few short weeks he trained us very well We set up an electric fence to keep the puppy in But with this naughty Beagle, we simply couldn't win He quickly learned to escape the electric fence without a doubt So then our fence served only to keep the puppy out He needed supervision, entertainment and good food He had to play a fetching game to calm his restless mood For when he was the least bit bored, the devil would appear And we'd find complete destruction of all that we held dear He chewed up carpet, clothes and shoes, mail and checkbooks, too Important documents and books, to mention just a few We bought a dog repellent to save our family room But Beagle loved the smell and so our furniture was doomed He pulled up kitchen linoleum and ate up magazines He relished in destruction, the very source of puppy dreams There wasn't any object in the house he didn't chew Our peaceful moments with this pup were sparce and very few One day someone offered to take the Beagle home To a place where he could stay outdoors with room enough to roam No longer would he howl at six and wake the neighbors up Nor would they fall asleep at night to the howling of the pup No mangled pizzas, no buried sneakers, no more wild goose chases No more stolen objects in my yard from far off places No more would I be lured by those endearing Beagle eyes While behind the Beagle mask there was a devil in disguise Elizabeth Santos |

Elizabeth, All funning aside this poem is a classic. Never read one better. Your poem is as playful as the beagle. Put it in a safe place it is a keeper. Love Sy |

This is adoreable, Elizabeth! I had a beagle once....not like yours, though! He was most precious and well behaved! My daughter, though, now has a cousin of your beagle, of the boxer variety! They should have named him Satan! Denise |

Thank you all for the comments. Seems I'm not the only one. The only thing this dog did that made me laugh, was to stick his head way out the car window. His super long floppy ears would catch the wind and he looked like a little Piper Cub taking off. Thanks Liz |

Pet's aren't there cute!!! Very nice poem and so deep Hope that the renovations are limited Sorry but I had to smile The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools. |
