Mind once cluttered deep in thought
now finds itself violently clear
every muscle now held taut
the runner waits in constant fear

their world a circle, life a gun
anxiety in seconds scream
and when its over only one
will realize the runners dream.

Upon a heartbeat rings a shot
body explodes into the air
blood begins to boil hot
lungs begin to slowly wear

and so the inner war begins
between the body and the mind
he whose head stubbornly wins
decides who will get left behind

Air and patients growing thin
you tell yourself theirs no escape
for all that keeps you from a win,
200 meters, and the tape.

Oh boy, when I make it up the stairs ahead of the cat, that tape worm says it all...*g*

Sorry Kevin...it was caused by a rush of air to the head...brilliant poem, I love to watch the marathon ...sadly from far behind the front runners as I limp into 9k place...but worth the effort, specially for charity and plasters.com

I really like the words about the mind being "violently clear" - great poem, Kevin!

Kevin...I've never competed, but there's not a thing in this poem I don't understand. Wonderfully written

Kevin, I love the style of your writing. I was in the 400 meter in school, this is exactly how it is. Bravo.

I always hated running, but I love this poem. You have a rare gift of being able to see things poetically! Keep it up!
