Saxoness recieved an email from her sister "that included a mind blowing picture. It was a story about a pregnant mother who's child had spina bifida. The child would die unless he recieved a new type of surgery in which the doctor would operate while he was still inside the womb. Well, the doctor performed a C-section and made a small incision in the womb...and right before he began to operate...that small 21 week old baby stuck his perfectly formed hand out and grasped the doctors finger. A picture was taken at that moment...and it came out perfectly clear. It was the most breathtaking thing I've ever seen."
The challenge she issued to echo was to write a poem...from the perspective of the doctor in that very moment. (I hope you don't mind that I went with this too Saxoness...it was just to great to pass up...for I too saw that photo)

Humbled

My steady hands hold the knife;
well practiced, well learned,
and I stand at the brink
of science at its finest.
Today I make history.

One quick cut, and blood flows
in a gentle stream
upon an abdomen
where life resides within.
I break the barrier,
between our world and another,
going where no other doctor
has ever been.

As the damn of amniotic fluid
is broken and I smile
at my greatness,
one tiny hand
reaches out
to grasp mine.

In one breathless moment,
I’m reduced to humility.

This blows my mind every time I even think of it. Ruth, I'm thrilled that you took up the challenge as well. Bravo! I think these poems should be included with the photo. Thank you!
It's truly a beautiful piece.
