One sailed forth into life that day < !signature-->Who offered friendship's hand to me Sincerity rolled like the sea In waves that washed the fear away. So gentle was this tide I'd found I knew no safeguards need I take In soothing ever gentle wake I felt as though on solid ground. At last I sensed no need to hide To batten down the inner self To stow away on some dark shelf The me that was recessed inside. Uncharted was, to me, this course Through many fathoms darkly deep Yet still no secrets did I keep I felt the anchor's weighted force. Now in the choppy seas I flail Preservers gone - they'd all been tossed A lesson learn from one who's lost Still shipwrecks happen in the gale. Denise And slight is the sting of his trouble Whose winnings are less than his worth; For he who is honest is noble, Whatever his fortunes or birth.~~~Alice Cary, ~Nobility~ [This message has been edited by dsnyder (edited 01-20-2000).] |

I wrote something somewhat similar waaaaaaay back in Open 2. But it wasn't nearly this beautiful and poetic. It's good to be back. |

How sad, to reveal secrets, only to have them tossed overboard. Unfortunate for the one on the horizon, who may not have those secrets shared. Really enjoyed reading this poem. A glimpse into the heart. DH |

Ahhhh! You set my soul at ease with that one.The ocean is a big part of my life, and I'm sure this is true of you as well. Reading that poem brought back memories of glass calm seas, both night and day. I think I'll print this one out.Ahhhhh..... |

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Earthtones - I'm glad you liked it! Yes, the ocean's in my soul, but sadly not close enough geographically. WildChild - Thanks for your kind words! It is sad that we open doors that hurt but still inside the pain a lesson of the heart remains nothing lost then nothing gained. Beautiful poem Denise! |

Loved this poem Denise ! Maybe the lesson was sad, it made you write a beautiful poem, so something good came out of it, right ? |

dsnyder, I have to agree with everyone, it's very beautifully written. I know how it feels to be tossed overboard!!! All I can say is, at least we open up ourselves, I would rather have loved, even if the other doesn't love us back, than never to have loved at all! |

Denise- Differently lovely from your quill. Really a 'thinker' poem. Thank you for this. I couldn't help being reminded of the phrase, 'sink or swim'. Sometimes we get so lost in the sea of emotion that we can sink. I'm thankful that you're a ~swimmer~. Love ~Marge~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

May I add my kudos to this fine piece? You cover many emotions here, not the least of them, the possibility of drowning in one's own aftermath. I have much to do to catch up with you. Well done! Sunshine Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |
