I saw a man with money. I said "Place it in my hand." He said "No, you can not have it" And I said "Oh, yes, I can." So I punched him in the belly Then I kicked him like a swine By the time that I got finished His money was all mine. Then I saw a man with a pretty wife, Said, "I want to be her man." He said, "Sorry, you can't have her" And I said, "Oh, yes, I can." So I ruined his reputation Till he didn't have a dime. By the time he lost his self-respect That woman was all mine. Then I saw a man with property Said " I want to have your land." He said "Sorry, you can't have it" And I said, "Oh, yes, I can" So I gathered up my armies Didn't stop til he lay dyin' By the time that I got finished That Indian land was mine. |

This is very thought provoking Balladeer. We surely have learned many lessons from the mistakes we've made. |

They took the Indian land the women they did ravage. When we protested ... they said ... HOW SAVAGE ! Is it any wonder the Indian had begun to think of 'white man' as one with ~forked-tongue~ ? Proudly my Indian heritage calls out to me ... Home of the brave ... land of the free ? (or was that FREE LAND ?) *Thanks, Balladeer ... hope 'taking stock' means seeing that others look at our past with reality. Nice one Sir!...We can't always take what we would like or want and thank heavens really, cause if everything was that easy, what would be the point?.. HUSG Bal Don't ask me where I'm going, just listen when I'm gone and far away you'll hear me singing softly to the dawn. |

This is great, serious subject, wonderful poem! ~*~ Hell is not a place of fire and a devil with a tail and horns. But a place of torment because the light of God is gone. To escape this, accept the blood of Jesus Christ! ~*~ |

You never cease to amaze me, 'Deer. This is wonderful. It's not the love you fear, but the fall from the height~Edwin McCain |

You may boast of your lineage And laud it with pride- Your family were nobles- On the sea's other side. They came on the Mayflower Or even before- My father's were waiting For them on the shore. Civilized? MKodern? They boast it with pride and never once heard of Five Civilized tribes.. The payment they owe us- Is still in arrears... They paid for our land- With a Trail marked by tears. Good job Balladeer |

To buy we did not understand The meaning was not clear We all simply shared the land Among us it was dear. The white man came and offered us Beads and Blankets and Brew But somehow we failed to discuss What our land meant to you. We would have shared it happily With peace throught the year Until you pushed our families Down the Trail of Tears. |

Amazing my friend. For every action there is an equal and oppostie reaction. To take by force creates a defensive reaction. We see this continually in our history. Well written, is it not time we learned from the mistakes of our forefathers? |

Thou shalt not covet! Wonderful lesson in a great poem! If poets ruled the world, there would be none of this...we are a people of passion and caring! I say we overthrow the government and rule by poetry! |

Your poem has brought this horrible tragedy of our past into crystal clear focus. Wonderful piece, Balladeer. Denise |
