“War Is Hell”(the Battle of Bull Run) Green was the sward as they entered therein- And balmy and clear was the day, They’d lofty illusions of what war consisted- And cheerfully entered the fray. The people came out as you’d go to the park- To picnic, and watch, and have fun, But little they knew ere the day had quite passed That Death would hold court at Bull Run. Four years of tragedy lay in the future- The stuff on which media thrives.... Ere Lee had surrendered there at Appomatox- It took a great toll on their lives. Death touched our nation on every front- They say Sherman said, “War is Hell”! And Bobby Lee said, “Far best it is horrid- I fear we would love it too well”. Blue against gray, and brother fought brother- And father fought cousins and sons- And shattered the heart of many a mother, They wept at the sound of the guns. Youngsters grew old in the space of one battle- And many no older would grow... When grape shot and canister slaughtered by thousands Impersonal Death laid them low. Therein lies a lesson, our nation should glean from... And we should have learned it quite well.. Although he wore blue, and fought for the Union Sherman was right. “War is Hell”! I just said that the other day to a friend that I hate war, not only because of the loss of life but also because of the havoc that it wreaks on the survivors as well. It leaves scars that never heal. Every fiber of my being screams out against it. War is hell...I couldn't agree more. Excellently done piece of writing, as usual, sir! You get a great big BRAVO from this 'Yankee' Denise And slight is the sting of his trouble Whose winnings are less than his worth; For he who is honest is noble, Whatever his fortunes or birth.~~~Alice Cary, ~Nobility~ |

I took a walk all by myself, and gazed up at the sky. I wondered why the guns must roar, and all the young men die. I asked where are we headed, and though I pondered long. The only answer I received, is that killing is always wrong. Is it the blood of human beings that dyes our good earth red? Or do we flaunt our patrotism with the growing of the dead. How long will young men have to die in wars that old men start? Will mothers always hear the news that means a broken heart? We're sorry ma'am your son is dead he died to make us free. The metal box he's in is sealed but this picture you can see. This piece of paper in this frame is supposed to be my son? Where is my happy bright-eyed boy? What hav you people done? We killed your son and many thousands more. Some of them were blown to bits and rest on yonder shore. We can't ship an explosion home, or a hole torn in the ground. Thats why many an empty box will soon be homeward bound. When will the killing stop you ask? Im not the one to know. I guess it iwll only stop when there's no more to go. Soon we'll kill up all your sons, and the rivers will run red. And then we cant kill any more because they'll all be dead! Phew ok, sorry! I loved your poem! Couldn't resist putting this one up after reading yours! ~*~ ^i^ ~*~ Love is such a lonely art, and death is but a taste. Minds are merely instruments that often go to waste! ~*~ ^i^ ~*~ |

Echo...Good poem, hmm, great poem, but: Since Cain first labored hard and long To cause the ground to yield And in a fit of anger- Slew his brother in the field... Men have worked at making war- Their only real success- It seems is turning fellow men Into a bloody mess. Wars may come, and wars may go- But, friend, I'll tell you what- While wars these days may not be much They're all the wars we've got. ) Kidding. |
