A place of words and upturned rapture The crackle of a turned page someone clearing their throat thoughts zipping in and out of sections skidding across tables zapping from computer terminals perfume of knowledge surrounded him crisp and clean with an edge of the dusty history everything hushed and polished. From the window gazing the mountains closed in his vision like he could walk there to the place of Manzanita its red-barked graceful trunk and yellow Scotch Broom abandoned down the hillside falling from boulders painted red and black with graffiti He knew in mind A twisted scrub-lined road with pine trees that were smog damaged. Oh, but the same book was open on the table he gazed upon the page again and again to keep his hands from shaking and his heart quiet the mountains in a place he had never been a place of big trees meadows of clean air golden craggy peaks longing cast a shadow across his soul. The sun was setting those beloved doors closed the cement steps the clock tower even the sidewalk were stained colored mauve and violet windows watched. The high craggy peaks of cement and concrete steal and glass at this moment captured the rosy glowing countenance of the sky. He saw buildings instead of trees but there was that same reverent hush around him as he had felt in the library had seen in his mind holding hands in upturned rapture. In the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. (ee cummings) |

Martie- How do you do it? I so admire the picturesque scenes you paint with your words. This is so lovely ... it just blows me away. You seem to take me to places I know I have not been. And then .... maybe I have. Wonderful. Just wonderful. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

"and violet windows watched" ....absolutely love this line, Martie. I have felt that reverence at sunset, even from within the midst of a busy city streetside. There were a few precious evenings as I would emerge, this late fall, from the hulking medical complex in the heart of the city, where I was staying in Hospice with my sister, and nearly melt in the beauty of the late~day's flood of amber and burgundy. Such loveliness and splendor juxtaposed against the devastation grimly taking place within the building...there were times when it was nearly overwhelming. Your poem brought it all back, and I thank you for such a touching read. Beautiful. Claire |
