Mother

Never before have I understood how much pain you took
To give birth to a child, I had to take a closer look
Never has your heart my soul forsaken
Why did it took me so long to be awaken
Never before did I know how much you really cared
Never before did I know how much precious love you shared
You carried me, …more than once
You loved my wrinkled face
In your heart, there was only grace
You cared with endless love
You wrapped that love around me like a glove
You guided my first tread
Provided a tender safety net
You were there, whenever I started to chatter
The ear that could hear just what was the matter
My first works spoken made you cry
Today I know the reason why
You’ve taught me right from wrong
Through your ways I now know where I went wrong
When I said “Mom ” you were always there
Always protective, always aware
When I took ill, you were my nurse
You didn’t need to take a vow,  “For better or for worse.”
So often I would have looked like a fool
without your guidance throughout school
Many times you took my broken heart
Rebuild my trust with your gentle art
You stitched my heart right back in place
Your only reward, the smile on my face
Through the years, you safely moved me like a pawn through chess
Never before did I know, never before did I guess
Yet you stood, proud, with a smile as I took my wife
Retiring a roll, you’d done, all of my life
Somehow it broke your heart, but even so
You saw me wed, and let me go
Your grandchild, your pride and joy
Although, a girl and not like me, a boy
You’ve loved her as if she was your own
How could she know…? You soon be gone

Never before have I understood how much pain you took
To give birth to a child, I had to take a closer look
Never before did I know how much you really cared
Never before did I know how much precious love you shared
Giving always all of you
It was the only way you knew, never half but all of you
Forty-five years have gone by
Why didn’t I said more often “I love you”, …Why?
You know I’ve not been one to cry
Remember “Mom” the day I cried
That was the day you died

Goodbye

Helmut, This is a very moving tribute, so full of love, and that sense of guilt that goes with losing one you love. There are so many truths that you've written here.
It is truly a lovely poem

Mothers always know, Helmut. They also know that what they do is never fully appreciated until their children are grown and have children of their own. Beautiful, touching tribute to your Mom!

There is always an empty space filled with a candle in my heart. If you know what I mean, I guess you do. Thank you.

Denise
Yes I now what that feels like...now.
Why does it take that long?
Thank you dear

I read this through brimming eyes, Helmut. I have been both child and mother, and your portrayal of what a mother means to one's life is striking. You must understand...your mother knew, in her heart of hearts, your love, for she placed it there.

This is by far one of the most sincere poems that I've had the pleasure to read here or anywhere. Thank you for sharing this with us.

There certainly is a unique bond with our mother that transcends all others... and you've expressed it beautifully here, Helmut.... Very, very nice indeed....

Mother's are so important in our lives and sometimes I think I overlooked a little bit what's most important. I 'm honored with your reply.

Nan
Thank you for your kind words.

Marge.....Thank you
I will check the mail. There is something special about you, perhaps you are a mother too. Love -Helmut
