There was a major gas explosion in my neighborhood tonight,  2 1/2 blocks from my house, about 3 hours ago. It felt like a truck rammed into my house, and my daughters, who both live a half mile further west of me, had their storm doors open and slam shut, and didn't know why.

One worker from the Philadelphia Gas Works was just found dead, 3 others from PGW are in critical condition and one firefighter is in serious condition. There must be more injuries because I am still hearing ambulances 3 hours later. Fifty families have been displaced, and the American Red Cross is on the scene, as well as HazMat. We've been advised to stay inside due to the fumes. One structure has collapsed and a second has partially collapsed.

The area looks like a war zone.

Please keep the victims and their families in your prayers?

This was a grim reminder that none of us knows what the next moment holds in store. Tell your loved ones every day that you love them and be kind to everyone you meet.

Thank you, latearrival.

I learned this afternoon that the PGW worker who was killed was only 19 years old. It was his first day out in the field as an Emergency Repair Apprentice.

So very sad. He was just a kid.

Denise, I haven't seen this  on our news down here. I hope everything is settling down and that the families displaced have accommodations.

Those explosions aren't as rare as one thinks.

Praying for the families and that of the young man killed.

OMG that's awful and so close to your home.
Googled and found this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41146412/ns/us_news-life/ with videos, they got the explosion on tape

gas is so unpredictable ... my sister-in-law was lost in a house fire, Dec 6 2010, due to a gas explosion ... my brother was watching the late news when the house became an instant fire ball ... he managed to make it out, then tried twice to go back in, but couldn't find her ... he spent the next couple weeks in the intensive care burn unit.

the love and prayers of family and friends in the entire community, kept him going.
so I do believe our prayers can help in troubled times

That is horrible! I'll remember them all in my prayers--those who were involved in the tragedy in your neighborhood, Denise, as well as Rex's family members. And I have to say, I'm glad you are ok, Denise.

I'm so sorry to learn this.  For sure my prayers will be with the families.  You're right we just never know hour to hour.
