Dear Ida, thank you so much for caring!
Living in California like you must have made you sadly familiar with these quakes!

It has been a very scary night. At 3.32am we woke up because the beds moved and the windows and shutters made big noise. I went up immediately and the lamps were swinging ...

We waited to know where the epicenter was. It was at a distance of 80 km from Rome in the area of L'Aquila/Region Abruzzi and sadly there were many victims, til now they counted 150 but there are still people buried under their houses. Especially the houses in the medieval centers of the town L'Aquila and the villages in the area did not resist. There are 60.000 people without shelter. They are providing with tents and by sending people to the hotels at the coast.

It is very sad.
Even in Rome there have been damages in some buildings and they still have to check many sites. Also the antique Roman Thermal center of Caracalla has been damaged.

Praying for the souls of those departed and for those injured and those in need of immediate assistance.

Thank you, dear Ida. We are fine, but impressed. The power of the earthquake was 5.8 Richter scale.

Love and hugs.
Margherita

I am so glad it missed you, but so very sad for those it didn't miss.  That area is so beautiful I hope the damage to the medieval centers toward town.  So very sad this weather is doing us all in.

I grew up with earthquakes on the west coast (California) and am all too familiar with the devastation they bring

Praise God that you are okay. I have been watching CNN and my heart just aches for those who have lost loved ones and those who are uncertain of loved ones and those who lost their homes.

Mother Nature was certainly in a fury.

God's blessings on all who are suffering.

Oh, I am so glad to hear that you are okay,
Margherita. Yes, I know what earthquakes can do. I have been hearing on the news about all the people killed and injured. I will join you in saying a prayer for all of the poor victim and just hope it's over, no major aftershocks.

Thank you all my dear Poet friends, for caring, for praying, for being close to those who have lost so much.

It's not finished. This evening I was at the home of my Swiss friend Gertrud when another strong quake arrived. She lives on the 5th floor (attic) and the trembling was felt strongly. It seemed never to end and I felt it was almost as strong as the first devastating one. Indeed it was 5.5 Richter scale! Many buildings which had partially crashed went down totally at L'Aquila and there have been further victims ...
It is very scary.
Love,
Margherita

I can only imagine how frightening this must be.  Our granddaughter is in Rimini, so I rushed to google maps to learn where she was in relationship to the quakes.

Margherita, I'm so happy to learn you're safe and I pray for all those affected. Being on the 5th floor had to be quite shakey during that last one, too.

God bless,

Margherita, I saw it was quite a way south of Rome, but was worried that our Margherita may not have been in Rome at the time.  I am so glad that our Margherita is safe, even though you felt both quakes.  I cry (and pray for the souls of) so many other people's Margheritas that didn't make it and those who lost their Margheritas.  Death is so final and what a horrible way to die, especially as most, if not all, people would have been awake and conscious at the time, I would imagine.  Thank you for being safe.  Please stay that way.

Sadly, the devestation is continuing with the aftershocks. Even once the human recovery work is done, there's so much to be done to house the thousands now with relatives, friends and in tents and hotels.  Disposing of all the rubble and preparing to rebuild. It's going to take a lot, especially for the homeless.  My prayers are for all.

I just learned of the earthquake and immediately checked Announcements to see if there was any word on our beloved Margherita.
Praise be to God, she is safe.

I am overwhelmed with grief over the loss of life and all those who have lost their homes.
My prayers are with them all.
