Volusia County, Florida, will kick off a two-month celebration of Women in the Arts with an opening reception at 4 p.m. Sunday at the African American Museum of the Arts in DeLand. Special invited celebrity appearance by Marge Tindal, poetess, who will give us readings of some of her beautiful poetry. You don't want to miss this. She touches many emotions in her readings. The Celebration -- organized by the Florida Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts Central and Central East Regions -- will be at several locations throughout the county, including DeLand, Daytona Beach and DeBary. It will coincide with the museum's traveling exhibit, "Transitory Patterns," which opens Sept. 23 at the DeLand Museum of Art, 600 N. Woodland Blvd. The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., a dream of Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, was incorporated in 1981 as a private, nonprofit museum to promote all women's art, including dance, poetry, writing, visual arts and cooking, local spokeswoman Sylvia Cashion Saul said. "The museum was started after it was realized that there was no concerted effort anywhere in the world to keep records of women's art," said Saul, regional director of the museum's Central and Central East Region in charge of 250 members in eight counties. The museum's purpose is to give women artists more opportunities and to make the public aware of them. "We've hired a New York curator, and this is really big news for DeLand," Saul said. "It opened in October in Washington and is being shown in only three places in the state: Fort Lauderdale, DeLand and Tallahassee." Saul said only private funds were used to send the exhibit to Washington and bring it back to Florida. "It took a whole lot of money to put this thing together," she said. "It was a gift given by members of the Florida board and from many private donations." Saul said more than 700 women artists throughout the state answered the call to show their works in the exhibitions, including Elsie Lauterbach, a 95-year-old DeLand artist and committee member who works in watercolors and mixed media. The exhibitions, dates and locations are: "Small Works -- Big Ideas," two-dimensional artwork, Sunday through Oct. 29 at the African American Museum of the Arts, 325 S. Clara Ave., with opening reception at 4 p.m. Sunday. "Visual Diversity," two and three-dimensional art, Thursday through Oct. 13, in the rotunda at the Thomas Kelly Administration Building, 123 W. Indiana Ave., DeLand, with opening reception at noon Thursday. "Reclamation and Discovery," two- and three-dimensional artwork created from found and recycled materials, Nov. 3 through Dec. 2 in the rotunda area of the Thomas Kelly Administration Building, with an opening reception Nov. 3. "What is Drama," 30 pieces that explore the quality of light, color and subject, is expected to open in October as the first exhibition at the Performing Arts Center, Lincoln Street and International Speedway Boulevard, Daytona Beach. "Memories and Messages," Nov. 4-20 at DeBary Hall, 210 Sunrise Blvd., DeBary, with opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 4. Poetry performer for this event will be Marge Tindal, local renowned poetess. She will entertain us with readings of her Native American Indian Heritage Poetry. A banquet at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at the DeLand Artisan Inn will honor the women artists, with guests from our Florida Women in the Arts headquarters and the National Women in the Arts headquarters in Washington, D.C.. Special entertainment of poetry, written and performed, by DeLand's own Poetess, Marge Tindal. A tour of women's art at downtown DeLand galleries will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 23. "This isn't just about women artists," Saul said, "it's about patrons and artists working together to promote art. It's women helping women." ***So, that's me in a poetic nutshell*** Wish me well ... as I will represent the art of poetry to my finest ability~ Each of you should look to your own states for a chapter that you can join~ There are numerous opportunities for poets to perform and further the interest in our heart's work~ Also, at these gatherings, there is opportunity to display and market our arts as well~ |

Aw, thank you all for your kindness~ If you all were in the audience, I KNOW I'd love looking into your friendly faces~  With 7,000 - 8,000 poems I've written ... believe me, I've had a difficult time choosing which ones to read~ LOL @ me ... I've spent hours and days looking over my 'stuff' ... whew ... Well .. got the morning after poetic hangover~ PiP got good positive coverage ! Still getting phone calls and emails from some of the 200+ crowd~ Wow ! ... got several other 'bookings' as a result of this showing~ And as an invited artistic contributor to my local Museum of Art ... I am encouraged to print, frame and sell my poetry and photographic/poetic efforts~ The garden club has commissioned me to do poetry for the entries, and also to sell some of my 'blossomed' pieces at their next flower showing !! I've received 9 requests already for PAID custom orders for 'grandchildren' poetry~ (like you all KNOW this one will be both fun and easy for me !) It's a wonderful day to be a poetess~ No books left to sell ... and out of the 20 I originally ordered ... I thank you all for your uplifting words of encouragement~ It seems a little selfish to appear to be boasting, when so many are going through sooooo much in the hurricane ravaged regions ... but I am proud to let you know that the event on last Thursday evening was spectacular and I was pleased and honored to be invited to be a part of it~ The poetry I read was accepted enthusiastically by those artists present in abundance~ The food was great ... the talent overflowed the room ... and made me even more aware of the fact that I'M PROUD TO BE A WORD-ARTIST~ The county I live in has drawn a proclaimation dedicating this month to The Women in the Arts~ *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ |

The fantastic events continue and I'm as busy as a poetess with a new inking well~ Have done four readings since my last report ... and will do three more before this month is ended~ My work ... poetry/photos were chosen to be on display at one of the local area gift stores that support our artistic efforts ... and I've been busy as can be getting them printed and the frames handmade ... it's such a nice way to be honored ... and they are actually SELLING at a fast pace ... with orders coming in for more ...~ My community local Garden Club has commissioned me to film and poeticize their upcoming Spring Bouquet Show ... I will be enthusiastically looking forward to this venture in 2006 ... did I say 2006 ??? ... too soon in coming~ Thank you all once again for all you've done to bolster my spirit in these ventures~ *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ ~*No matter what I search for ... |
