I almost always take the crayons.

At restaurants, I mean.... and for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which is that sometimes I write poems with them while waiting for the meal. Here are a few of those that come to mind, the second of which applies to this story....

/pip/Forum79/HTML/001047.html

This morning it was breakfast, at a hotel restaurant in San Diego....I was wearing my silly "Mahalo" tee-shirt, and the lady at the front desk smiled, told me a little wistfully about missing Hawaii, since she'd moved to the mainland....

I took the crayons, and that made her laugh -- and teasingly bring out the children's color-me placemat to go with them.....passing by our table later she smiled again, with a little comment about me being "all taken-care-of".....

One of the happys on the place-mat was a puzzle, "Choose The Crab That's Different"...one got colored red with green polka-dots and blue eyes...and marked "Me".....

Around it I wrote this:

Why I Take The Restaurant Crayons

I take the crayons
because they're a simple joy,
not just for children.
We who have known life's waiting,
do we not deserve them most?

             Mahalo!

.....and I folded it as a card, wrote on the front of it,
"Because you smiled"....and dropped it by the front desk as we left....

I'll never know what happened next, but that's ok.

I hope that she treasures it as I would have.  What a lovely story!

doesn't that make you feel great..and  wonder too?  it's like when I leave those valentine roses and the poems for "someone"  at a mall bench every year...I would love to see who picks them up...hopefully they don't get tossed away.

It did....and this does -- on a random bench for someone to find....that's marvelous!

....and what a story you could write, about someone who finds them.....

Actually I do have an inkling that I might find out some day, what came next....and I hope so. There's one thing I truly would like to know.....

She clearly had oriental blood....I wonder if she might have a background that would let her notice it's a Tanka, and understand that meant the poem was written carefully and seriously for her, not just tossed-off in spite of having been scrawled in my handwriting, which is childish enough without being multiplied by crayon....I'd like to know that.

There you go again, making someone's day special!  My hunch is that she knew it was written in form especially for her.  Doesn't it feel good to leave those little surprises?  I wrote a card someone at work recently, telling a lady how much I appreciate what she brings to the workforce and community.   When I started to sign my name, I decided, instead, to sign as "Anonymous".   I passed her several times in my poker face, knowing that she must have been puzzled from where it timely came.  I doubt very much she gets many warm fuzzies for all of her contributions.

May you always borrow crayons, Ed!  There goes-it's the art in you just dying to come out!  I KNOW!  Looking forward to another picture of a painting!

And miscee, nice of you to write that note.

Nakedthoughts, How wonderful. I love it. Just think, you may have changed a person's life with those valentine roses. best to all of you, martyjo

The little things matter most.......

I keep a fragrance bottle my
muse gave me when I met him
in endless winter and he
settled me into remembering
who I am.

now that just made me smile, Ed

Mahalo indeed . . . I must get back there someday.

That was so very sweet of you to do and you know you made her day.

(I always color too, the one restaurant here - the tablecloth is brown coloring paper)

Maybe you should go back and see . . .
