Some recent news in Kansas - one, the BTK killer has allegedly been caught, but the bigger, better news today for aviation buffs is that the first non-stop round trip flight may be made from these very parts ... Steve Fosset will hopefully be taking off within a matter of a few hours...

and will hopefully land some 80 hours later right back here in Salina.

We're packed with people...and the excitement is high!

Aside from Sir Richard Branson's appearance, it's been reported that other celebrities, such as John Travolta, are probably somewhere in the crowd...

Last I heard, he was going on to Hawaii and things were looking up a little. Thinks he might just make it after all or at least may have some chance.

Pete, I certainly hope so. Various reports have him from losing 1 to 3 ton of fuel - I went so far as to ask my husband who has a good deal of aviation background whether or not the gauges could be malfunctioning, similar to Fossett's losing his lights last night. He said "yes" but on the flip side of that coin, who wants to have Fossett take the chance of being wrong?

If he cannot make it back to his starting point, I at least hope that he'll get the tailwinds he needs to make it to the continental US, and land it safe.

Because I know both he and Sir Branson will give it another shot!

Last I heard, a couple of hours ago, he was approaching the west coast and Branson was encouraged that he might make it all the way.

He's due to land at 1:15 p.m. DST...we're just all aflutter! I saw the takeoff, but sadly, I won't be able to see the landing other than on TV. Just that he makes it safe, is what I will be thankful for.

Yes, and Sir Richard Branson has been absolutely wonderful with the people, as has Fossett...getting out in the middle of the crowds, shaking hands, slapping people on the back, generally making himself quite available and full of good cheer!

Yay! I heard about that too, that is awesome. I would be a little nervous too to learn that the jet was getting low on fuel, but look at that, he knew what he was doing and he must have had one incredible adventure!

(giggles) I don't know if I'd do that, LOL, but I'd love to go on a worldwide adventure somehow!

Fossett told KSAL News that he had showered, and slept for an hour, before heading to the victory party.  A large crowd gathered around him as he signed autographs.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius presented Fossett with a Kansas State flag that had flown over the capitol.  Fossett told the cheering crowd that one of the best decisions he's ever made was to choose Salina as the location to attempt his historic GlobalFlyer mission.

Virgin Atlantic presented Fossett with a scale model of the GlobalFlyer.  Governor Sebelius, Airport Authority Executive Director Tim Rogers, Salina Area Chamber of Commerce President Gerald Cook, and K-State Salina Dean Dennis Kuhlman all received GlobalFlyer models as well.

Before the evening ended, the GlobalFlyer project made a $10,000 donation to the teen center.

When people have "fun"...good things just keep rolling on!
