Thanks PDV Here's a little info for anyone interested: What's in a name? When Huron-Iroquois used the word 'Kanata'(village) in describing the route to their settlement, explorer Jaques Cartier assumed it was the name of the land and the name stuck. The Canadian Flag With the nation's centennial celebration approaching in 1967, the Canadian government assembled a commitee in 1964 to create a new distinctive national flag as a symbol of national unity. Until then the country had flown under a British Red Ensign and while loyalists bitterly attacked the idea, the red and white Maple Leaf was adopted. The Canadian Coat of Arms Aside from the maple leaves the shield contains symbols from each of the European nations that shared in Canada's founding: The three lions of England, the lion of Scotland, the Irish harp of Tara and the Royal fleurs-de-lis of France. The official motto of Canada 'A Mari Usque Ad Mare', derived from Psalm 72:8, meaning from sea to sea is found below the coat of arms. The second motto behind the shield, 'Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam', is the offical motto for the Order Of Canada(awarded to exceptional Canadians), meaning 'They Desire a Better Country.' National symbols Canada's early economy was based on the lucrative beaver pelt trade which exported up to 100,000 pelts a year to Europe at up to 20 times their purchase price. Luckily for the beaver, close to extinction by the 19th century, european fashion shifted from furs to silks and the rodent was spared. Based on this and it's industrous nature, the beaver was adopted as a symbol and officially by Canadians in 1975. The maple tree served the Natives and early Canadians well both as a source of wood and of food(maple syrup...drools)and its leaf was widely adopted as a symbol by the 1800s. By the 1900s Canadians wishing to distinguish themselves abroad, wore maple leaf crests in various battle and in Olympic competition. '..the room fell silent, and somewhere off in the distance, a cat barked' ~ RG |

Thanks Sharon! It was a beautiful day in Ontario. Hot and sunny, with tons of exploding fireworks last night. I could see a huge display going off in the distance from our home, while all around me, I had fireflies lighting up all across the back yard, surrounding me like a little private light show of my own, lol! |
