Around 5:20 PM this evening, two small planes collided over a northwest Denver neighborhood. That's all we are seeing on the news. I just wanted those of you who know I live in this area to know I am about 8 to 10 miles from this location. The other poets that I know of who live in this greater Denver area also live at least this distance away. It's an awful scene right now, and I will keep you posted when I know more, other than that one home is destroyed, another damaged. One plane exploded, one slammed into the ground, and they still cannot confirm any fatalities or survivors. But I saw the scene, so I doubt there will be survivors. I work not far from there, and will soon be moving to a neighborhood only 3 or 4 miles from this location. The planes were apparently around 3000 ft altitude at the time of the collision. How awful this is. My boyfriends brother and Grandma with some other family members live in Denver. I will have to call them. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone during this tragic time. |

If anyone has family in this area and are unable to reach them, the Red Cross has set up a shelter at Highlands Methodist Church, Denver (303) 477-5857 (Rev Betty Bradford) for those who live in that neighborhood, which is just northwest of Invesco Field, downtown Denver. It appears so far as of 8PM Denver time there are 3 confirmed deaths on the planes, and only minor injuries on the ground. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (01-24-2003 10:10 PM).] |

Thanks Kacy. I am having E-mail problems right now, but I did e-mail you back so hope you get it. I have been trying to call his Grandma and brother but they are not in right now, so I will try again later to see how they are and how far they are from what is going on. Thank you again for the information, I will keep on praying for everyone. |

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Kacy, I heard the news an hour ago, it is terrible, though luckily no one died or was even severely hurt in the crash, thank God! (sad sigh) There is no report yet on exactly how these two planes got tangled up in this double head-on collision! (sad sigh) My thoughts and prayers are with the people in the neighborhood tonight, who must be feeling very nervous and anxious and need our strength! I live only 20 minutes northwest of where it happened! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

It seems as if 5 people were lost in this tragedy. I'm not one to talk of miracles, but this seems to me a miracle that two planes crashed and burned in a very heavily populated area and only 5 people were lost. Makes me wonder, why some are luckier than others. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (01-27-2003 01:18 AM).] |

I too just heard that, only 4 are confirmed dead so far but it is possible a fifth person's remains are around. It all happened at dusk last night, over northwest Denver about 20 minutes from where I live, and six other people only got minor injuries after the wreckage flew a long distance and debris scattered over the neighborhood! A Cessna 172 was departing Centennial Airport for Cheyenne and a Piper Cheyenne II left Jefferson County Airport for Centennial Airport. The planes collided in the air near 26th Avenue and Irving Street around 5:22 P.M and then the Cessna crashed into two houses on the north side of Moncrieff Place and the Piper crashed on its back on 26th Avenue. (as cited in the Saturday edition of Rocky Mountain News & The Denver Post) The nmain question now is who was monitoring the planes, which is as yet uncertain. I too find this a miracle there were few casualties though my heart still goes out to everyone who had to experience the drama last night and to the families of those few who did lose their lives! My prayers are with them! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

This is both a tradegy and a miracle all at once. What I don't understand is how two planes can crash at 5 in the afternoon in daylight in a sky that is huge? I am not understanding was it foggy, or how does something as as big as a plane not see another plane? I am so happy that more people were not hurt, and Noah you said someone was monitoring the planes (you mean flight?) then how could this happen? Any more news on this we never hear your news up here. So sad, and yet amazing not more were hurt. |

Well I have a niece and family there. Thank God they are okay. Thanks for the report you guys. God bless all of you. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

My question here is much like Mysteria's... How indeed does this happen? It's a very large sky out there... I'm grateful that losses were so minimal as well...` |

The NTSB is investigating. It happened at dusk, around 5:20PM, which is always a low visibility time as the sun falls behind the mountains. The two planes have limited visual range, huge blind spots. The 4 seater Cessna has wings above the pilots visual range, the 8 seater Piper wings are below. If one was banking in a downward turn and the other happened to be heading upwards at the same time and same altitude they would not even see one another until too late. They were flying in opposite directions though, so perhaps it was a case of last minute sun glare, or someone looking away for a moment? Forall we know, a pilot may have had a sudden medical problem? Too many questions. The young pilot had been solo flying for over a year, and was considered very adept. I know how easy it is to change lanes in a car on a busy highway and not see someone coming up alongside you. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (01-26-2003 09:50 AM).] |
