Hello everyone.  I'm looking into newspapers, online news services, and various pertinet issues, and I was hoping to ask you all a few questions. 1. Do you use a paper every day? a. If so, what do you like/dislike? 2. What would you think of a national newspaper? a. Would you like one in print? b. Or one based online? c. What would you like to see in one? 3. Do you use an online news source? Any thoughts that come to your mind when it comes to newspapers, online news services, and whatnot would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you. Would you like one in print? b. Or one based online? c. What would you like to see in one? Answer: I think USA Today is a national newspaper. I don't read it, they don't do the indepth stories I like to read. 3. Do you use an online news source? Answer: My favorite bookmarks are: CNN, FoxNews, DrudgeReport, CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC - I'm a news junkie.... And I watch A lot of Cable News.. |

I dislike that newspapers are one-sided accounts, and very possibly are completely erroneous, although its unlikely. I dislike how facts are twisted. 2. What would you think of a national newspaper? a. Would you like one in print? b. Or one based online? c. What would you like to see in one? I would not like it in print, I tend to misplace things like that, or in our house they get torn up or something. *mutters* If it were based online that would work. I think that if there were one, I would like to see good honest reporting, possibly two stories for each newsworthy item, covering two different opinions on the subject. However, I realize that this is highly unlikely. 3. Do you use an online news source? No, I have very little time online now, I use it to come here and to check my email. A national newspaper can't focus on the local events that a local paper can....that's what I meant by indepth... What about news magazines like Time? Do they count? |

Working at a newspaper, I'm very interested in this thread. . . so yes, I do use a newspaper every day. . . Is a newspaper one-sided?? Some people will tell you "yes, definitely" and some will tell you "never". My newspaper has been called everything from Ultra-Conservative to Bleeding-Heart Liberal and everything in between. . . we've been accused of being in the pocket of State and City government, to promoting "alternative lifestyles". . . it's all in how you see it. . . a newspaper's job is to report the news in an accurate, fair, and reliable way. . .I feel that we do that, as do most newspapers. . . do we still have a long way to go?? Yes. . . but, we're getting there. . . I don't think that newspapers will ever really go out of style. . . there will always be a need for them. . . but, the form and the content of them will be different. . . the time may come when your newspaper comes to your door as a CD-ROM, or comes via your printer, with content that you've pre-selected. . . of course, there will always be the paper and ink newspaper, even with the advent of the 50-inch web design that most papers are now adopting. . . (note: if you've seen USA Today, that's a perfect example of the 50-inch design). . . USA Today is the first attempt at a "National Newspaper". . . it's been called of lot of things, both good and bad. . . over the years, it's undergone a lot of changes. . . but, it's still got a long way to go. . . it needs to be everyday, not just weekdays. . . it needs to be more in-depth on some stories. . .and perhaps, needs more content tailored to each state's news. . . I use lots of online news sources. . . CNN, USA Today, MSNBC, you name it. . . they're all very good, and they all give you different sides of the same story. . . So, there you go. . . this is a really interesting thread, and I hope that more people will take the time to answer it. . . ---------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. Well, actually, TIME wouldn't count. I'm referring to a national newspaper, not a magazine. I enjoy TIME. and all the various magazine such as those, but what I'm curious about is newspapers. Sven... thank you for your reply. I'm looking into what it would take to start a national (daily) newspaper. I myself believe there will always be a market for a newspaper, and I think a good, balanced national newspaper could be successful. But is there a market for another (national) one? I'm not so sure. I'm curious the market trends for newspapers. What is your newspaper? "and perhaps, needs more content tailored to each state's news. . ." Very good point. I had considered (as I was writing down ideas) what it would take to have a 'City Section' aimed toward the different cities in which the paper would be dilivered (San Diego, Los Angeles, Chicago, et all) but fairly quickly I realized that would be very, very difficult. Now... a state section? More feasible. My thinking is, have the paper based/produced in a single city (say, New York), send out what the paper will be to various cities, and have them add their 'state' section. Allright, others? i read a paper every day, the washington post when i'm in DC, the philadelphia inquirer when i'm in philly. i don't think mainstream papers like those are nearly as "biased" or one-sided as some people think. there IS another national newspaper besides USAToday, btw....the New York Times. as far as state sections in a national newspaper go, what's the point? what could a national newspaper do that a good local paper can't (as far as state/local news goes)? do you really expect USAToday, or any other national paper, to have reporters in every statehouse, county courthouse and council building in the country? they'd just wind up getting most of their content from the local reporters anyway. you might want to check out a book, titus, called "the making of mcpaper", about al newgarth and the founding of USAToday... pretty interesting reading (especially about his early days on a local paper in south dakota). say what you will about USAToday, but it wasn't easy launching it to say the least, and they've done a pretty good job with it. jenni |

" The reason I would include "State" sections, or was considering it, was to get the customers more attached to the paper. Make it a bit more... personal. The local papers could do it, yes, but... if I do both, wouldn't that make me more appealing? It's always hard being the "first of it's kind." I just don't appreciate their approach. It feels slightly... less respectable (then, say, the New York Times) or slightly fake. I respect them, but hope for something better.  (sigh) I think I can see your argument here, sweet friend, it seems as while we are all entitled to our own local newspapers and the affairs that revolve in our proximities, we all seem segregated almost from each other and we all don't know about what's going on all across the nation, thus we must have a national print in order! (sigh) I a in favor of this, for while the New York Times and The Washington Post and The L.A Times and the Chicago Tribune can be nationally-known, they do not reflect the lifestyles of all Americans! Usually when I read a newspaper, in which mine is The Denver Post, I always look for stories about people and the contributions they make, or debates in politics and religion and sometimes even sports! I find views on all of this to be the most significant and highlighted depths of the publications, and what can influence us later! I really don't pay attention to particular bombs set off, car crashes, natural disasters, etc. all that often! Also, I do check news updates on a few sites. For all news, I go to CNN.com, whereas I always check http://www.billboard.com for music news! This is a very interesting point, sweet friend, I LOVE IT!!! What would you think of a national newspaper? - I thought the USA Today was a national newspaper? a. Would you like one in print? b. Or one based online? c. What would you like to see in one? - a national paper on-line is basically Yahoo, MSN, etc. I do believe. Interesting articles are always what I like to read. 3. Do you use an online news source? - yes ~ yahoo, MSN, etc. |
