I saw "Harry Potter" today. I won't tell you want I thought of it unless you want me to....

Here is a good rental out this week:

"Songcatcher" - it's the story of a female musicologist from New England who travels to the Blue Ridge Mountains to visit her sister after she gets passed over for a professorship at a college. The professor discovers that the mountain folk sing old English ballads like they were meant to be sung 200 years prior (this is set in early 1900's). No big stars - lots of music and a good lesson. I enjoyed it.

Seems like most of the movies I've seen this year were real stinkers, with very few good ones thrown in the mix. The most recent good one was "Knight's Tale," about an English commoner with a dream normally reserved for the nobility. It was a little predictable, not historically accurate, but still a decent story.

"Shakespeare in Love" really surprised me. Not only was it unusually accurate in terms of historical detail, and a cute love story, but it was just plain hilarious to imagine how the Bard's personal life "might" have influenced the writing of Romeo and Juliet. The ending was realistic, not at all candy-coated, and so (for a romantic) pretty much sucked.

Though probably not new for many, the best movie of 2001 for me was "Finding Forrester," with Sean Connery. It's the story of a reclusive writer who unwillingly mentors a young high school student, and what each get out of the unusual relationship. Most movies, I think, avoid complexity. This one, like a good novel, is a story told at several levels. Highly recommended.

I still have a copy of "Pay It Forward" sitting on my kitchen table, a movie I suspect I'm going to enjoy. Bought it the first of the month, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I'm looking forward to picking up "Planet of the Apes" this weekend.

Of the ones you mentioned Ron, 'Finding Forrester' is my favorite, followed by 'Shakespeare in Love'.

I saw 'Finding Forrester' twice in the theater and rented it when it came out on video. To me, that's the true test of a good movie..if I want to see it again and again (or own it - there are only a few that I do own - 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' and 'The Commitments'. I'll probably buy 'Billy Elliot' also - another one I've seen about 3 times now!

I did see 'A Knight's Tale' but was put off a bit by the 'modernistic' twists in it. I wanted a good old fashioned knight's tale (but loved the bits about Chaucer!).

I will reserve my opinion of 'Pay it Forward' until after you've seen it...it will be interesting to know what you thought of it.

'Planet of the Apes' is very realistic for a totally unrealistic movie! The makeup is incredible!

I'm curious...did you like Harry Potter? I'm going to borrow my niece as an excuse to see it.

My favourite movie this year (and actually the only one I saw, and then only because it was showing on the plane), was Bridget Jones Diary. I absolutely loved it. A friend read the book and said it's even better, so now I have to get the book too.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

really i have been disappointed in the last few movies i have seen. the one movie i am looking forward to is 'lord of the rings'-- it will be interesting to see how true it stays to the book(s)

I think 'Lord of the Rings' is going to surpass 'Harry Potter'..several of us are thinking of taking the day off from work when it opens just to go see it..but I think the lines will be TWICE as long as for HP. Fortunately, most multi-plex theaters will have it on more than one screen. We have one theater here in town that has a HUGE screen. I'd love to see it there...sit right in the middle, half way down (with no one in front of me so I can see)...

Shakespeare in Love was a hoot.  But I didn't have to rent it - it was on TV the other night.

For those of you into Time Travel, A Love Letter, which is a Hallmark movie, is pretty good.  Puts one in mind of Somewhere in Time.

Shakespeare in Love is a great movie, funny and romantic

Tomb Raider  is ok, it's a movie that allows you to just relax and see the action and Angelina Jolie too *faints*

I'm not sure what the title is, but that movie was awesome.  I think the title was enemy at the gates.  It's about a Russian sniper in Stalingrad on World War II.

Enemy at the Gates is a great movie. Very gritty and it's the true story of a Russian sharpshooter during World War II. I'd highly recommend it.

I haven't seen Tomb Raider, as I'm not a big fan of Angelina Jolie.

Has any one seen K-pax?
I adore Kevin Spacy..was wondering if the movie/script held up to his acting ability?

he said ... "dont cry" ...

I saw Kpax and loved it!! But then I love Kevin Spacey - everything he's ever done is wonderful!

GO see it!!!

I saw "The Others" yesterday. I think that is one of the best movies I've seen all year. Of course it follows closely behind "Moulin Rogue!"

I want to see Tomb Raider, but not so much for angilena LOL Jon will enjoy that part...
We recently bought Planet of the Apes. WOW! What a fantastic movie. I really enjoyed it. The ending was the best. Not sorry we bought it at all!

watched Down to Earth, with Chris Rock...I laughed almost all the way through it....

oh and we saw Final Fantasy...I liked it alot, but thought the begining could have been better. It just kinda "jumps into" the story with out an explination till much much later in the movie.

I can not wait for Lord Of The Rings!!!!
I won tickets to see Monsters Inc. Will be going one day this next week. Anyone know if its good? LOL The kids will love it I'm sure.

How about Shreik? I wanted to get that movie, but my brother in law says it has a lot of "adult" humor in it, and I don't want that for my kids.

and Sunshine, no time travel movie will ever top Somewhere in time.....SIGH....I love that movie...

and now I think I'll be looking for Bridget Jones Diary   sounds good.

and I want to see a knights tail...what is his name?? Heath Ledger....good grief, he makes my mouth water

Just a note to Sea..If you can ever get hold of The Two Lives of Jenny Logan on video, it comes REAL close to Somewhere in Time. It's out of print, but well worth it if you can find it
