And I'm sure my overseas friends will love this...but I just realized...that not once, EVER, in all of my voting capacity years...have I ever voted FOR someone. In every election, it has always been a choice of the lesser of two evils---and my FIRST VOTE...was for Edwin Edwards, our recently CONVICTED ex governor of Louisiana....and did I know he was a crook? YES I DID. But dammit, David Duke was running against him. WHAT'S A POOR SERENE CITIZEN SUPPOSED TO DO? Somebody please explain this to me...How does this happen? Why oh why, EVERY SINGLE ELECTION do we end up with candidates that nobody seems to want? (serenity exits, beating her chest in angst...ouch) |

In a perfect world, serenity, we would be allowed to choose between two or more candidates who, despite their differing opinions on this or that issue, were nevertheless ALL caring, concerned, and upstanding members of society with a genuine interest in the "service" imperative which would seem to be inherent in the idea of "public service offices." Which is to say, in a perfect world, there would be no politicians, only leaders. The problem here is politics. Heaven forbid that a candidate be anything more than a puppetlike extension of the ideals of his or her political party -- such a radical departure from protocol would result in a swift and irrevocable political death. It is the unfortunate circumstance in the United States government that there is little chance for success of a Presidential candidate without the support of one of the two major parties. Even the standard by which federal campaign finance funds are granted is based on political parties; if a candidate secures 5% of the national vote for President, he qualifies his party for federal funding in the next election. So, unless a candidate is extremely wealthy and capable of financing his/her OWN national campaign (which carries its own set of complications; i.e: he/she 'bought the election'), the vast majority of Americans who do not have thier noses in politics on a regular basis will never be aware of any candidates other than those thrust upon us by the Democrats and Republicans. In short, sometimes the frying pan and the fire are the only choices we have. Of course, we could always choose to have someone else choose for us by not voting ourselves ... --Linda Remember: maintaining a positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will certainly annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. |

Phillip? This entire election has been oxymoronic...so please, allow me just a bit of drama...sigh and Linda? I do understand and I absolutely agree with you. The irony here is that this is the first time in ten years I haven't voted. I looked at them both and couldn't see a difference. I did think to vote for the "party" of my choice next, but then I looked again at them, looked in the mirror, and couldn't see a difference. This apparent apathy of mine is out of character for me, so I am just trying to figure out how I personally got this way. Thank you all...I do feel a bit better, if only because I've simply decided not to think about it anymore. TODAY. grin. |

depressed? again??? hehe ... well, me too but, on the subject at hand... sorta... i called this the "eeny-miney-moron-election" but i voted because i CAN, despite the lack of choice because i always think, if you look closely enough, you can find the lesser of two evils and this country may be really really tired, but i'd certainly hate to see it totally Bushed! *sigh* i know nothing of the Louisiana election so can't comment on that but no matter what happens, there will still be the French Quarter and we can still meet for a toast of vodka & jazz.... despite our blues... y'know? i shall blame the media. by the time the election happen, we are SO SICK of hearing about the candidates that anything would seem like the lesser of two evils. by november, we're just sick of the candidates. blah. |
