I can't say that I LOVE these designs--some of them capture the essence of the 9th Ward, and some of them fail miserably in the nostalgia department, but for the most part? I can see an awning here, some shutters there, and, um yeah. It's N'awlins with a modern twist. AND? Floating houses. With solar panels! check 'em out folks. http://www.makeitrightnola.org/ One house at a time, and I'm forever grateful that development speculators got a shove back from making a very quaint neighborhood into a mundane commercial buiding complex with a vast parking lot. *smile* Floating houses...wow. I'm waiting for our flying cars now. (Karen just might be able to drive on a rail.) |

Interesting houses. At least they are not all the same in a row. Remember when they did Levit town and the song about ticky tacky houses all in a row? My Brother and his wife lived on a canal in Homosassa Florida a few years back. A huge tidal wave took out the neighborhood. They had a FEMA loan to rebuild and it too had to be up on those stilts. Both he and his wife have since died but they loved the new house. jo |

How many houses did Oprah build and how do they look? |

Oh no, now you did it! Do you have any idea how long it took for me to get that song out of my head? I will hear Malvina Reynolds and Bob Seeger for years now again! Little Boxes K, being "green houses" they look great to me, and sure a vast improvement over what was there right? Ya? How many did Oprah do? What do they look like? |

I don't know what Oprah is doing. She doesn't generally advertise what she does, nor does Bill Gates. That kind of money moves quietly. The situation with Brad Pitt is different because he is showcasing an example of what can be done, and I'm sure it's not just his money, but his pretty face helps draw attention to the project--and hey, it is what it is. If I ever get around to it, I'd love to take the ride down there--I'm told it's rather odd to see a little enclave of bright and shiny amid the normal "make-do" of some who came back to rebuild on their own, and other houses still boarded up. I like to look at the pictures, although it's not the same as it was and never will be. I miss the shabby stuff, I really do. And I'm going to miss more of it from what I understand, as plans to homogenize New Orleans move forward with the planned demolition of even more neighborhoods to make way for a much needed central hospital. These are sad and confusing days...because those houses? Some of them look a little more New Orleans than the others, and I think it wouldn't take much to make the others less boxy and modern-looking. Throw in an awning or too, will ya Brad? I'm gonna go practice my guitar. If I have to move to Northern Mississippi I'm gonna learn to play the blues. |

Oh. And if you guys heard about a "riot" at the University of New Orleans? That young man that was maced was not my son. Looked like my son, acted like my son, but nope. My son's heart was broken prior to the state budget cuts that those students were protesting. We couldn't afford the tuition BEFORE. |

But back to the topic. I'm a little bit distraught as I have a very long list for hurricane preparations--a new item on the list is vaseline--in case of flood, vaseline supposedly helps to minimize chemical burns and toxin absorption... I'm looking at those houses a bit more forgivingly as I imagine the new protocol for hurricane survival: 1. Drop anchor? sheesh And yep, the irony of needing a petroleum product to protect myself from petroleum did not escape me... |

Geez, not again! Where do I watch out for you K? Here? NOLA Watch By Parish Heck I have been so busy with babysitting animals I didn't even know there was another hurricane watch. As always, I am thinking about you and yours K, Sharon, Mike, and everyone else living on the east coast. And Nan! Good grief - I am just watching the news, and Cape Cod is under warning it said. Oh that is just a slice of heaven that better not be touched. |

Hey, I'm trying to not watch myself watching myself...and I really wish they wouldn't do those anniversary things, but I guesss it's good tv. But? If my acknowledgement of fear appeases the storm war gods? Then yes, I'm scared. BP put a spin on hurricane season that I am embarrassed to admit, never occurred to me. |
