well i am sure we all have them and what I'd like to know is....

do you consider them "real" friends or "imaginary" friends...either way...how and why do you come to that
conclusion?

curious me

Definitely real friends.
I didn't realize that til I got to know White Dove (Becky). She was my first real friend and I have made countless others since.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we might as well dance.

Well, personally, even the UNREAL acting characters are always real.
REAL, and even if I never get to meet you in 3D reality? You are all real to me, and I act as if we'd be real-time visiting friends if we lived in the same state or country. I've only met five Pipsters in person, but can safely say each IS very real. I stay in touch with each one, even if only via email or the board.
Then again, there are a couple of internet people whom I've decided might just be....poetry-generated anime characters. LOL

More real than most of the people I see every day. It's a different kind of relationship, that's sure....but there's no less of friendship in it, and in some ways there is more.

I'll go with both: some real, some not, just like in Real Life.  Some become great friends, some don't, again, like RL.

Of course, that's how I met my sweety, through MS Comic Chat back in 97 (friends) and then met up with her in 2000 (friends) and am still with her (significant other, aka burrito blanky baby).

er..thanks(?) and pbllllllt kacy lol
i always thought i was more berkeley breathed inspired than anime
http://www.berkeleybreathed.com/Images/fav_strip9_full.jpg

but for a few rare slips, i'm notoriously guarded and incredibly self conscious so personally, i only consider a handful internet friendships 'real.' there are others that i'm slowly working on, and others i've abandoned for better or worse.

it seems distance, and the comfort of being behind a wall(screen), allows some people to open up more than they normally would, or could. which is both the beauty and danger of the internet friendships.

provided you get past the obvious dangers of trusting anyone on the net, these are what i've found to the basic elements of internet friendships:

the beauty of the comforts i mentioned, are that they allow some of us to be ourselves, rather than the caricatures we consciously or unconsciously create in the 'real' world(or on poetry boards ). because of this, you can get to the core or essence of a person much quicker

the danger is, once things go bad or things get shaky, those comforts i spoke of become a means of retreat or withdrawal from responsibilities that come with relationships

but determining a great friend from a bad one is not much different from the real world really, it just happens faster

I used to ask myself the very same question Maree, and I think that there are definately real friends on line and then there are those who only act out who they want to be. The sad thing is when we actually get to meet someone to find out they were putting on a front the entire time....but as to if there are real friends on line..
yeppers, some better than the ones we have in our real lives....
I dunno, I'm sure that didnt help any, but for me, there are those who are on line and there when needed just as much as those who are right within touching distance...

and there is no distance hon when it comes to the heart.

ok...Im done rambling now....

If you are all still putting up with me after five plus years, then I guess "friends" is what I would call it...sometimes it even slips, and feels like "family"...

definitely real . . . sometimes it hurt more in here than out.
Sometimes I laughed more in here than out.  Sometimes I found more comfort in here than out.
and sometimes I have been so mad in here that I would have gladly taken a hammer to the screen.

I have been lucky enough to find people that understand me, moreso than most people I see everyday understand me and I do believe it does have to do with being unguarded.

Even though the people that are right in front of us see us everyday, they do not always see what is inside of us.  It is that rare glimpse you offer, letting someone in, that makes it so very and most definitely real.

It is almost as if you lose one of your senses in here, yet gain another allowing you to show yourself. Which is dangerous, but I have not regretted one thing. I have learned so much from all of you and have helped me to become a better person.  I could only hope for the same.

Maree, I know hon, sometimes it feels like the distance is so far that it hurts like hell, but yet in the heart, we hold them as close as we want too.  You know what I mean...(I think...   )

I have got to go with the "depends on who we're talking about" response. I have met some on here- and other online sources- that I would consider friends. There are others that I would consider to be aquaintances. It all depends on who they are.
Everyone should know where they stand.

ahahaha OMG, that is the first time I laughed all day, sorry Brad.

Oh, I think friends are real enough here.
Different, though.

These windows are of different shapes and we see a different view.
Some glass is oh so smokey and other is crystal clear.
The unlimited three dimensions are dwindled down to two.
And as easy as one may come to be, as easily one may go, I fear.
