cigarettes cause lung cancer, and i smoke about 20 a day. i don't drink, but i have seen the tremendous affects of alcohol on an alcoholic's life, and health. both tobacco, and alcohol are deadly, and legal, but are they sins? |

I don't know if this helps at all. Tobacco is part of many religious ceremonies performed by First Nations people in North America. And Jesus himself drank wine. He even turned water into wine at a wedding when the hosts ran out. I think it's a moderation issue. If you smoke too much and/or drink too much and it effects your health..maybe that is the sin. |

Depends on whether you believe in the Bible... If memory serves me correctly the bible talks about putting things into the body that is harmful... As for drinking I beleive it says something about "drunkedness" (is that how you spell it?) being frowned upon. But I haven't looked at the bible since I was a teenage...so my memory could be a bit off. ![]() "cast me gently into the morning, for the night has been unkind" |

i agree... i don't think there is any sin in smoking a cigarette, or drinking a beer, but habitual use of these things are destructive to oneself, which i would think is a sin. how is it then, that a proclaimed christian may destroy himself by smoking, and not be held accountable for that sin? |

I don't believe they can be considered a sin, but simply a health issue. Do you know anything about emphysema? |

I just ended my reply to you in the Alley on your statement that you think tobacco is the most worst drug of all and now you're saying you're smoking 20 a day and asking if that's a sinn? Do you really want to know or are you just bored and decided to throw some statements around the forums. Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

You can look at it like this - Your body is a temple would you desicrate a temple by bringing the impure into it? This goes for all things that are harmful - smoking, drinking, excessive indulgence in food, drugs- But more than that, it is common sense to care for this body as you only get one and it must last a life time - Best of luck and I hope you successfully kick the habit before it kicks you - it's a hard thing to do, but it is doable Susan |

Titia, that really isn't the issue... why do folks always question me like that? but, the fact is, i've been smokin for 7 yrs, and would really like to quit. it's very hard for me, and I regret ever starting. Susan, i do agree, but i think a beer ever so often may not be that bad, as long as one doesn't become too drunk, or an addict. the same for cigarettes; while a single cigarette wouldn't do any harm, a regular smoker endangers himself. so what is the sin? consumption, or addiction? i think the sin is addiction. |

"how is it then, that a proclaimed christian may destroy himself by smoking, and not be held accountable for that sin?" Just what is your definition of "held accountable?" If you believe in God then holding one accountable is for your God to take care of and you would not know. I believe in Karma, and trust I have been "held accountable" for my misdeeds...but no one really knows that but me.. "cast me gently into the morning, for the night has been unkind" |

I couldn't of said it better than Susan. I drank AND chewed copenhagen when I was younger. I quit a couple of months before i got pregnant. I don't think I sinned, I just made my life better, although it was tough to quit chewing......I did. |

Susan, you make a very good point. It is for my God to judge me. but also, other christians judge me, and my consience does too. |

well, your conscience is yours to deal with. The other point, is well, why I have a hard time with organized religion... too much judging...makes for a not so nice "Christian"...but again, we are not to judge even them, only their God should do so or we become what we proclaim to have a problem with.. We are held accountable, DreamChild, because we "reap what we sow", Christian and non-Christian alike. I've a sneaky suspicion, though, that God is a bit more forgiving, and understanding of what we are made of, than some of our peers may be. |

Maybe I'm just a cynic at heart, however I feel that the Good Lord has more on his plate than whether to make me sizzle and fry over a friggin' Marlboro... now, a Benson and Hedges, maybe, but not a Marlboro. In the wooden chair |

Denise, i feel the same way as you concerning our Father's mercy. Ringo, I think you're right too. Benson and Hedges are a terrible sin. |

You don't have to spank a child for putting their hand in a hot fire. Sin, like its little sister stupidity, usually carries its own punishment. |
