Or at least that's what the LA Weekly is suggesting in this fascinating article about the current state of poetry. I think WE know better... http://www.laweekly.com/ink/99/43/books-bernhard.shtml (My thanks to Poet deVine, who emailed me a reference to this. It was thirty minutes or so very well spent.) |

I found it to be very interesting also! But when it was sent to me, the sender was quite upset that anyone would think poetry is dead. From the article, it appears a case has been made against that very thing! Perhaps the 'coffeehouse' poetry readings are not frequently attended but how anyone can think there is no interest in poetry is beyond me! We have an archived Open Forum #1 to prove it!!!! As I told them, over 10 million hits so far.....and the site is not even a year old yet! ![]() |

Poetry will not be dead until all the ripples that our, our predecessor's, and our descendant's writings created cease to stir the waters of life. Alicat |

The nerve of some people, eh? I don't think poetry is dead. I see more and more emphasis on it lately than I have seen in a while. umm..or is it just that I didn't get out much until now? LOL! No matter, I still say it is more alive than ever. Thanks for the information, Ron. I have marked it to favorites for later reading. |

I skimmed the piece lightly (plan to go back and read it more seriously later) but the first thing I thought was 'she's from LA'. I'm originally from LA and this article is quite typical of the general mindset there. The style is a sort of a calm, relaxed complaining thing and that is the safest attitude you can have in that city. The quotes at the end actually are an attempt (I think) to make her point: Oliver Stone reads poetry (and then offers something that's over a hundred yeas old as proof) -- give me a break. By the way, she offers two types of poet responses at the beginning. I'm definitely in the first category (I laugh hilariously when money and poetry are uttered in the same breath). However, I do think she makes some points that are worth considering. I'll try to add some more later (when I reread the article). Brad |

If they truely think that poetry is dead then maybe they need to take a trip over here to Passions and we show them a thing or two.. How dare they say something like that? They wouldn't know poetry if it slapped them in the face.. I will now stop before I start to rant.. Love, Lady ------------------ Live in my world just once and you'll find yourself enraptured. |

Perhaps we need to reply to them offering them a look at Passions? |

There's a thought PDV...invite them to check us out and then write their findings. I'm sure that they would find that poetry is alive and well and livin' large in Passions ------------------ What you hid from your parents as kids, you will hide from your kids as parents. ~Cletus T Judd~ |

Why not tell them about PinP... Ron or PDV? I read the article, and agree with PDV that the writer seems pretty upset about good poetry being insufficient, but it seems the reason people do not enjoy poetry is probably because they do not look in the right places [edit]....they really need a look at PinP. That's assured addiction.[/edit]. [This message has been edited by Artur Hawkwing (edited 09-24-1999).] |

Dr. Seuss and I both agree There's lots of poets in PiP, and for others to disagree, well, they're certainly not you or me! |

I think you could safely misquote the words of Mark Twain and say... Poetry " the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" Kethry Those of us who refuse to risk and grow get swallowed up by life. Patty Hansen. |

you know, i did a huge research paper based on that article. it's posted in prose, for anyone who wants to take a look. it was pretty interesting. "Glory remains unaware of my neglected dwelling where alone I sing my tearful song which has charms only for me." |
