I like the mention of native legends that spoke of a tiny race. Makes you wonder what truths lie in many of the tales we pass off as mythology and lore.

When I lived in the Islands, there were those who talked about the old stories of the "Mini-huni". Allegedly, they were a very small race of men who were living there in volcanic caves when the Polynesians arrived, and left carved stones behind when they disappeared.
Most thought these were just stories . . . but some believed.
