I recently read a story on a Christian group in the US modernizing it's bibles to lure teenagers back to religion. High gloss, modern text, it includes pictures and side articles to make it look like the popular teen magazines on the market.

So i was thinking maybe the Roman Catholic church should take the same approach. Maybe have the pope make an appearance on MTV's Rides or Funk MasterFlex's show and get the popemobile tricked up. Lower that sucker and pop on some chrome..sweeeet.

Ok i'm going to take a seriously needed nap or be shipped to hell

rofl....Raph that is too funny....it's good that they are trying to get teens more interested in God. It's important. Doing it in a way that isn't so intimidating is great.

And the pope getting his ride pimped...love it....next he could go on queer eye for the straight guy and get a new look

Kraw behind the humour, well i found it funny, that's the point. Aren't those words supposedly sacred texts? Glossing them up and adding side articles like makeup or dating tips is ridiculous.

okay, here's my perhaps boring response/opinion. Trying to show that Christianity is relevent to young people, that would be why they made it.

An opinion, if a kid doesn't want to read a dusty fat book, then make a glossy thin book; if they read it maybe they'll discover something they appreciate and find relevant. If not, that would be their choice.

I understand what you're saying, it's the message that's important. But if you've lost people's interest and have to resort to gimmicks to pull people back then maybe something's wrong....(better suited to the Philosophy section) I'll put it this way, it's advertising and advertising is manipulation. Quite frankly advertising, for me, is right up there in the scheme of evil things along with your Nazism, Abusers and Ben Affleck movies.

Shrugs. Really it doesn't matter to me as i'm agnostic but, in a world where it seems that nothing is sacred anymore, this kinda drives it home. Even the sacred isn't sacred.

I don't see it quite that way. When I write a story or poem, I do so for a specific audience. Does that make it advertising? Not to my mind. Is it manipulation? You bet it is. ALL writing is manipulation.

Remember Tales from the Crypt or Weird Fantasy from William Gaines and E.C. Comics in the Fifties? Before that, it was his father, M.C. Gaines, who's company was called Education Comics and published the first Biblical comic books. The Gospels weren't any less sacred as comics, just more accessible. And a whole lot more fun.

- "holding" all the books
- selling "credits"
- controlling the land base and wealth
Many ways to keep them coming back through the doors for one thing or another. When has there not been manipulation?
Religion has survived by evolving, much like successful languages, absorbing the past and the new and making it look like it was always thus.
Who is to say it won't "modernize" itself again?

Ron, I see what you're saying, but do you alter your style of writing for the sole purpose of gaining an audience? Writing for an audience and changing your style simply to gain an audience are different things. In the end of course, I believe all religion/dogma is manipulation so a manipulation of the manipulation just set me off.

Krawdad, I agree completely and would have gone further into it but stopped at "....(better suited to the Philosophy section)" before I became long winded. grins. I'd argue, however, that it's not religion but simply the means of luring an audience that has evolved. If the message has faded perhaps there's need of a newer or refined message rather than new gimmicks. But of course that's in the Big Chief's hands.

I liked your dry humor, even though I am a "believer." Reminded me of when Cash D. Amburgy from Sooouuuuth Lebanon, Ohio's Cash's Bargain Barn, started a church. I was never really sure what church it was. This was back in the 50's when all we knew was black and white television. His commercial was probably the first local ad I ever saw. Well, he advertised his bargain barn that way. With his church, however, he chose to put a gigantic neon cross on the steeple. We were appalled to say the least. I guess I don't feel that way anymore....he was just trying to sell the other things he believed in I guess.

JC for me there are too many versions and interpretations of the original stories were handed down.

True illana, I just think that some things should be treated with a little more tact and respect. Although the Pope driving around in a shiny purple and chrome popemobile to the tune of Lowrider would be slammin.

I must agree that the sacred should be treated as such, with reverence and respect. And my joke about the translation, that's serious. Already, much has been changed due to translation. And books have been left out. It is a search that must be made within the self, a communication between soul and God. To jazz it up so more will come means that one feels the message won't stand on its own as is. If that's true, then what's the point? It would be like taking a Rembrandt -- say the night watch -- and thinking, man, those clothse just don't work nowadays, let's give them some pants hanging down to their knees and bandanas instead of hats. Then maybe the kids nowadays will appreciate it as art.
