Get your calculator.

Punch the first three digits of your home phone number into your calculator [without area code].

Multiply by 80

Add 1

Multiply by 250

Add the last four digits of your home phone number

Add the last four digits of your home phone number - again

Subtract 250

Divide by two.

Recognize anything?

Just a little highschool algebra (simple enough to do in your head even) reveals the trivial trick to this one.

By throwing in a couple of extra steps and later removing their effect, it looks almost mystical on your calculator.

but this would work only for 7 digit numbers...

It would work for any arbitrary number of digits, Sudhir. You just have to change the multiplication base (Note that 80 * 250 / 2 = 10,000, which is what moves the first three digits to the left so that adding the last four digits will appear.)

sometimes i think an english major was a wrong decision, then i think of the math majors who sit around and think up formulas for things like this, and i'm happy again...
