my bf and I have been together for 9 months and he is the only person who has read it all. He's the first person I have been able to open up to completely. |

yes...when I first began writing I showed my husband..when he left me for another woman I showed him more and he even showed her..the jerk..since most were about him but he didn't even recognize it.. and now I show family when it is about them...I have nothing to hide...and no one to hide it from ![]() but I can understand the reasons others wouldn't. When I was married, I showed some of my writings to my husband... he liked a few, but disinterest was the norm... I ended up feeling like a puppy who couldn't find anyone to care that he could sit up and beg. *S* It wasn't until I was participating on a poetry forum and Toe and Long John united to badger me to post more that I realized some of my work might mean something to someone other than me... So... in the flush of excitement, I collected some of my favorites and gave the books to family and friends. Talk about disinterest! LOL They didn't need me to do their laundry, so they made my ex look enthusiastic! *G* Even now, in the accepting atmosphere of PIP, I don't show all I write... and still show more than I should. *G* |

I don't hide the fact that I am posting on here to anyone, and even have given the site out to a few who have joined; however, I don't normally show specific examples to anyone unless that particular scribble is about them, and depending on who it is. Example, I showed a few friends ones that were inspired by them, yet- until very recently- didn't show my ex ANYTHING. As I am about to have some of the ones about her published, I felt it was the right thing to do to show her. We are all equal but we’re individually different |

He is free to read what he wants...and I find my notebooks open at times...plus I write for him always...just little notes left on his pillow, or his computer. But not too many other people here in real life read my stuff. |

Seems to me it gets down to a matter of control. If I show a poem to somebody I feel strongly about, be it wife or anybody else, I'm hoping for a positive reaction and if I don't get it I write the next poem with an eye toward that person's likes and dislikes. If it's somebody as close as a wife or husband, you could be essentially limiting your audience to a single person, and turning over responsibility for delivery and content to them because you're intent on matching their expectations. I think that will inevitably make you less as a writer, because you're limiting yourself, ruling out some topics and ways of saying things. I have actually trashed poems for that very reason, when the response was strongly negative, and of course I would refrain from writing something similar even though it might be objectively good. That's why I stopped doing it, and don't mean to start again. |

Lauren...once again we mirror one another... my reasons are one in the same... its not so hard to understand why we would eventually find our inspiration elsewhere. And my poetry is the one thing I do for me... its the one thing that is all mine and I dont have to explain, justify, or share it with anyone I dont want to. Words break into splinters on the pages I write |

some of it i write for my self, and it has to stay that way, but most of it sure i will share with anyone "For those who understand you, no explanation is necessary. For those who don't, none is possible." |

usually, I show him some of them. There are some that are really too personal for me to begin to explain, or have to justify them. I shouldn't have to, not even to him. He doesn't pry or snoop, so that is pretty cool. He knows I post in here, as does most of my family. But no, I do not show him all of them. Just ones I think he might like. ![]() [This message has been edited by SEA (11-04-2003 09:03 PM).] |

We don't always share our every interest with our friends/relatives/spouses do we? It doesn't matter whether it's playing golf or writing poetry. If both are interested, then both will enjoy... If one wants to play golf with every spare minute, then off they go to the golf course - enjoying their obsession without their spouse. They play with others who are commonly interested in their own passion. That's what we do here with our poetry. There are really no differences that I can see... ![]() |

When my husband and I were still together, I did read my stuff to him over the phone in the very very beginning of our relationship. He liked them then as far as I could tell. He didn't understand them all, but he seemed to like most of them. Then one day...I started finally started really unleashing myself upon the page and began writing the erotic and sensual poetry that had been stirring in me since I was 16. Some of the first stuff was pretty graphic and I think surprising to him. *sigh* He didn't like it. Its like I put a part of myself out there honestly and let him read...and I guess it scared him. I didn't let him read very much of my poetry after that. Now that we've seperated, I let him read some of the ones that I've written about our marriage...the ones that are very difficult to write. Now, I'm involved with someone. I don't let him read everything because some of it sounds insane to me. I don't like to make him worry anymore than he already does. I get in very dark moods, and the stuff that is in my notebooks...some of it, would scare people...geesh..it scares me sometimes. Some of my stuff is actually in my journals. Some thoughts I just need to keep private. As for my family, they have read a little of my poetry. No one really thinks it is as amazing of a talent I think. I have let my Dad read one of the poems that was for him. He just smiled softly, and I can't really remember what he said, but he loved it. My Stepdad started flipping through one of my notebooks when I was visiting home one time. I got antsy, but tried to be still because at least he was showing interest. My friends used to read my poetry in high school and afterwards all the time. My best friend and her husband read my work when I give it to them to read. I do sometimes. When I give my work to people to read, I often get carried away...especially if they like it. LOL! Then I start letting them read stuff and can't seem to stop...think it gets on their nerves. lol.. Thats all I have for now. thanks for listening to me ramble. I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! |
