Gina Culliney has published, Joyce Johnson will be very soon(prob not her first time),Balladeer has a book of poetry, some others i would have to look up.And many poets here have been published in the books Ron has put so much work into. I am currently in the process of being published. I won my contract for placing in a poetry contest on Poetry.com. They liked my poem enough to invite me to the semi-finals convention in Orlando with about 3,000 people, where I read for judges and was proclaimed 1 of 20 finalists and awarded a contract. The down side is I have to market the book myself, but so far that is being fairly easy for the 100 copies I am getting in the award. If I sell more, I have to pay to have them printed. So, don't ignore poetry contests. Some really are legit. |

I'm about to be...in our book Reflections of the web. Answer to Miss Alex: sorry but Poetry.com is a scam and all they want is your money. Everybody is a finalist in their book, even the most dreadful writings are called superb. Can't find the threads about them that quickly, but it has been mentioned here at PIP and all over the internet. I submitted a poem several years ago and was also invited to their conventions. I refused and forbit them to use my poem in their Anthology. I still get invitations every year for their conventions based on that (bad) poem. So be very carefull for what you sign or you'll end up paying for those 100 copies. Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

I hate to be the one to say this, but I feel like you all should know. A few years ago Dateline did a report on Poetry.com and uncovered the scandal. My friends and I didn't believe it (as I, too, had been selected to be published) so we ran our own little test. We sent in poems that were just awful. All of them were selected to be published. As far as I know, it is just a scam to get you to buy the book. Sure, your poem will be in it, but so will many others that are unworthy of the honor. |

I won a couple of newspaper contests here in Texas and was published in the newspaper, actually gave me a weekend to Galveston for two, and tickets to the Circus, and a couple of other things. But, get this, there was this other girl who had the same name as me at that time. The newspaper contacted her because I guess her phone number was in the directory and mine was not (even though I put it on all poems and the entry), did a photo op and everything, and printed her along with my poems.....she took the awards and never told anyone it wasn't her poem; she just pretended to be me completely to get the prizes. Do you believe that? Well, it's true. Anyway, the man who had invited me to write to start with saw her picture with my name....needless to say, things did get straightened out. I suppose I could have made a big deal out about this, but I just let it slide. I was just glad to see my poems in print. Won a trophy once and was also published in an Anthology of American Poets (with about 3000 other people) along time ago...under my former name, Goad. I have had an offer to publish a volume now, and am toying with the idea...but I do love sharing here. There is every bit as much joy in it, no money (but who ever said you would get rich writing poetry???). I'm kind of curious why you asked the question? |

Well this thread was just what I was looking for. I too have recieved mailings from poetry.com and wondered if it was a scam or not. Same here I am a semifinalist and really didn't think my poem was very good and have been hesitent to write them back. Now I guess I'll just throw it away along with all the other junk mail I get...
