Pretty much every night, pretty much every one of us does the same thing... lay down and close our eyes, and then suddenly, we're asleep.  But it's not like we just hit some kind of switch, no... there's so much more to it, and because the sleep experience is so individual, it's different for everyone.

For you, what happens... between when you close your eyes, and when you are off in dreamland?  What does it take for you to make that journey?

Generally about two hours of tossing and turning.  If I write in my journal before I go to bed, my mind is emptied, and I'm able to sleep quickly, but when I don't, I'm awake and thinking for hours. I doze a lot, but I dont' actually sleep until I find the perfect spot in my bed (which changes every bloody night).  Sometimes I have to play with my pillows a bit before I can sleep.  If I've studied a lot that evening I'm asleep right away.

Generally, after hours of homework, normal human activity, turmoil of family, turmoil of self, reading, social activity, and thinking too damn much...

sleep comes easy. Within minutes, or so. I think for a bit, and then I'm out. Waiting for the 6am or earlier wake up call to start my life all over again.

Sometimes, I think to much and sleep doesn't come. But.... hell, four hours of sleep yesterday did me enough.

I haven't had a single nightmare.

And one strange dream ala 'Planet of the Apes', before ever having seen the origonal classic.

I think. Thinking makes me more stressed out than I am already, which makes me unable to sleep. So I think some more, and so it goes.

Usually, I'm eating.

Seriously? I usually listen to music while I'm sleeping, so the music usually sets the background for further mind tales.

I start on my back, listening to music or reading. Then I curl up on my left side, reach down and shut everything off, and wake up groggily in the morning with most if not all the sheets and covers kicked off.

Oh, and I wonder about dying in my sleep a lot, too.

I can't sleep without some kind of noise, preferably music. For some reason, ever since last summer, I have a fear of silence. I start thinking that I'm dead or dying or in terrible danger if I don't hear SOMETHING.. so I either leave the TV on a news channel or I leave on some music. I also can't sleep without praying.. and sometimes, like nights before important auditions, Tylonol PM's help!

i typically lay there, trying to slow down the out-of-control thought spirals for a few hours. sometimes i meditate a bit. sometimes i throw on some soothing music. my favorite is when i reach a hypnagogic or quality meditative trance state.

I sleep easily too, now.  I had insomnia so badly a while ago that I used sleep deprivation to ensure sleep every night... I'd sleep four or five hours nightly just to make sure I was good and tired the next night.  Eventually I grew accustomed to it, I'm not sleepy during the day anymore but I still sleep easily every night, and get 4 to 5 nightly.

But yeah, during those moments it seems to be important that I forget where I am and just become drenched completely in thought and imagination, which eventually turns into dreams.  Once my mind has perfect conversation with itself, I sit back and let it sing me asleep.

music - perhaps a current favorite cd or classical music - because it is nonintrusive - and doesn't make me want to get up and dance.  i refuse to think about work, but heading into my subconscious dreams i like to 'day' dream into night dreams...  then i'm out like the lites

But seriously....

I find it hard to sleep these days  don't know why.. maybe i should try counting sheep instead of empty beer bottles..lol

That's because they all remind you that you're trying to sleep, which is precisely what you don't want to do... you want to forget where you are and that you're trying to sleep.  Just let your imagination occupy itself.

Counting sheep never works...

Counting sheep never works.... it doesn't.

However, I usually find that I can fall asleep within a half an hour if I turn on my lava lamp and watch it... then again, they (who they are, I do not know) don't say Im a hippie for nothing.

Anyone ever dream they woke up in a bed with someone 10 yrs older than them and then took off for two weeks in Russia? Or am I the only one?  If you want the whole story..... you'll have to ask.

So does this mean sheep are evil? (NO! NOT THE SHEEP! ANYTHING BUT THE SHEEP!!! )

Or counting is evil?

What about numbers? Well, of course they're evil. Math is evil.

Does this make trying to sleep evil?

Or trying is evil?

Maybe I'm too evil-oriented...

I'm all about karma and meeditation. I've read all these crazy books about dreams, so now I "visulaze" my dreams before i go to sleep. I usually have a cup of chai and listen to music too.

Essentially, I just sit there...in my bed---and stare at my wall. Of course, these are where my DEEPEST thoughts are. I often think so deeply, where I enter a dream-LIKE state. No, I don't fall asleep or doze...but if I'm thinking of something, or reminiscing...it's almost like I'm there---where my mind is. But as soon as I lose concentration, I'm back in my bed...tired as heck! I eventually fall asleep...how or when, is beyond me!
