I think I have the most ridiculous job in history. At the weekends I work in a chinese restaurant called 'Graclands'. The owner is a chinese Elvis inpersonater and he performs while people have their meals. After he has finished his act all the incredibly drunk customers get up and do Karoke, if nobody wants to then me and the other guys who work there have to get up and sing, luckily that doesn't hapen very often. I kind of struck me the other night that this is probably the most farsical job ever, it is kind of fun though. Anyway do any of you guys have unusual jobs, would be very interested if anyone had one more unusual than mine! Or what was your worst job, could it be worse than listening to 'return to sender' sung in a chinese accent three times a night? I think not! Personally, I don't think there are any worst jobs. One should take pride in the job that he/she does, because having a job and working (even for free) is a better occupation than not having one. But that's my personal opinion, however Gandhian it may sound regards, Sudhir |

Oh,yeah I think there are jobs that can really stink. Personally I woulden't want to suck septic tanks for a lving. I guess the job I liked lease was telemarketing. that really sucked. |

anya, it sounds like hell... though it would be a great story for a sitcom. sounds very Peter Kay-phoneix nights. MY worst job was selling beauty vouchers on the street, I was paid comission. I had to pay for my own transport and might not get a sale all day. It lasted a week and half. Too early for the rainbow, too early for the dove These are the final days, this is the darkness, this is the flood |

Hey at least you've never go short of seeing some fascinating sights. Think of the stories in years to come. I, thankfully, have never had a bad job as such. Just utterly frustrating ones. I should never be allowed in retail...apparently I'm meant to tell the customer what they want to hear and not the truth. "No wonder I do not make people comfortable. I am a mirror. LOL @ lizzy... hmmmmm.....try hand cutting a boxful of capsicums everyweek....and then hand washing dirty dishcloths with fat clinging so thickly to it that it forms a yellowy orangey crust over it when air touches it. *shudders*....i HATED that..... Are you scared? BOO! Are you now? [This message has been edited by cherish (09-24-2002 04:56 AM).] |

quote: My view on success in retail (in this case women's clothing) can be summarized in one little blurb. It isn't about the answer, it's about rephrasing the question: Customer: "Do I look fat in this dress?" Average Salesperson: "Erm ..." (translation: yes) Saavy Salesperson (acting surprised): "Did you just ask me if that dress makes you look fat?" Customer: "Yes." Saavy Salesperson: "No, of course not." Truth, of course, because the dress has nothing to do with making them look fat. It's the extra 50 pounds they're sporting that makes them look fat! *evil grin* As an aside, I don't work in retail. Worst job? Waitressing in a restaurant frequented by retired personages. Occasionally rewarding, but most often consisting of 8 hours of the pickiest and most miserly persons for miles around. Though I agree with whomever said the job of the originating poster takes the proverbial cake ... |

I worked summers at Wal*mart in the shoe department for four years. One day, I said "Friggin'" over the intercom. Long, boring story. Sorta like the job. :p Yours actually sounds whimsical, in a God-get-me-outta-here! kinda way, anya. |

whimsical bsquirrel? It takes all my will power not to stab my boss with the nearest chopstick when he sings 'jailhouse rock' lol Seriously though I rekon your guys 'worst jobs' sound way worse, at least I am never board, and I don't have to be polite to anybody or lie to fat women that they look good in a dress, so I guess it's not so bad, |

I'm a Deputy Judge. Not the best job, although it pays well, but not the worst job either. It's interesting at least, and I always get a raised eyebrow when someone asks what I do. |

Check this: I am being PAID to dress up in Halloween costumes from the 12th through 31st of this month! And on the 12th, I am not doing any of my normal work (that "normal work" stuff is filling shelves with clothes, cleaning the floor, working the till, giving melodramatic Halloween announcements over the PA and being praised by customers/co-workers/supervisors for it)...I am instead telling scary stories to children all day while my best girl friend paints their faces! Yeppers, we at the "Thrift Department Store" Value Village are entertaining children this Saturday in a Halloweeny gimmick setup trying to convince their parents to spend money because they themselves won't hafta be looking after their brats while they shop. Oh well... I'm a natural at scaring little children! The ones on my block whisper about me as though I myself am an urban legend... So I get to go totally gothed out to work on Saturday and read all the stories I bought when I myself was a child. So, if nothing else, my job is cool for this one month. THEN I'll look into working at a REAL retail place! your tongue's like poison |

Oh, and Skyfire, that's not 'nuff said! I worked at Tim Horton's for 14 months (or 15?). 12 of those months were spent on the graveyard shift. 10 of those months were spent doing the muffin bake on graveyard shift! And now working at a thrift store during the day, I get paid more! THAT is insane. Grr. The donut baker Tony is talking to my ex-manager James about increasing the muffin baker's wage to starting at $9 ('stead of starting at $7), because there was a turnover of 5 bakers (including me) in only one year there. I think that says something about how thoroughly that job sucks. your tongue's like poison |

I'm a cashier at Wal*Mart. The most fun you can have outside a full cavity search performed by Carrot-top. I'd have to say, I used to give people some credit for not being complete idiots- I was very very incorrect. *shudder* There are more ignorant, unclean, shady characters in this world then I could have ever imagined. And it's just the best when they start yelling at you because there is nothing in stock..."Oh that's right!! I forgot to put out all the baked beans tonight, they really shouldn't let me be a stocker anymore!!! Awful, really I should be thrashed with a wet noodle for not assuring that our shelves were filled. Damn the cashier!" Or how about that Deli line? I really should cut that meat faster shouldn't I? The best was when someone didn't get to my line fast enough that someone else beat him to the punch...he thought it would be good to throw all of his groceries onto the belt over that other person's head to get checked out first. Brilliant!! Why is it that we are at our most ingenius only when trying to destroy the things that keep us alive and thriving? |

Picked asparagas...has to be done at sunrise - I guess you have to surprise the little stalks in their sleep? Cut rhubarb - with knifes that look like machetes. I lasted a half a day because I was scared I'd cut my hand off! Baby sitter for the summer - when I was 11 - still a baby myself! A pharmacist's assistant - had to help sell condoms and jockstraps...hmmm..that listing on my resume must be why Ron hired me to moderate the Adult Forum. Worked in a fabric store - I liked that job and have the ability now to measure a yard of fabric with nothing more than my nose and my arm (hmm..maybe THAT is why I was chosen to moderate Adult?). And lastly - a phone job that will not be expained in THESE forums! |
