Since I didn't dare to say something like Sandman over in th' novels, let's start up a new thread. What are your fave five graphic novels or comis? Mine: 1 - Sandman by Neil Gaiman and various artists. (My favorite is the tenth volume; The Wake. *shiver*) 2 - Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez. (Sure, it's psychotic, but the societal points it makes and the way the seriousness sometimes breaks through... again, *shiver*) 3 - Gloom Cookie by Serena Valentino and various artists. (It's much more in the light-n-fluffy side of goth comics than anything else I read, but there are times that it's so amazingly poignant.) 4 - Lenore by Roman Dirge. (And all his other cute little projects. He's very much like Jhonen, except not as controlled. And he tells the cutest little life story bits an' pieces. ) 5 - Swamp Thing by Alan Moore and various artists. (Nope, he's not the first to write for that story. He's just the best. And without him, Gaiman never would have gotten into the comic world! All hail Alan Moore!) written in blood before everything went black |

In no necessary order: Peanuts, Krazy Kat, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee, Lenore, Far Side, FoxTrot (older ones, though), GloomCookie, Bloom County/Outland, CALVIN and HOBBES, Pogo (Walt Kelly ones), Sluggy Freelance, Ozy and Millie, Jimmy Corrigan -- The Smartest Kid on Earth (sad stuff, which also links to ... Acme Novelty Library), Daniel Clowes ... I need a lie down. She said burn ... together. |

I answered this question in the "fav book" thread but I just had to put in my two cents here and agree that Alan Moore is a god! (lol) - Jeff |

Graphic novels? I'd say anything "GunSmith Cats" or "Saint Tail"...those are always cool! "No Need for Tenchi" is also phenominal too!!! Yeah---I'm big into manga! ^_^* Others are too in love with the sound of their own voice to speak the truth... |

Neil Gaiman is my god, in case I haven't somehow made that clear. He's British, he's well-travelled, so intelligent, so creative, the write of Sandman and fifty kazillion other mind-warping, heart-wrenching things. Yum! written in blood before everything went black |

I like Alan Moore's stuff quite a bit... I haven't read a whole lot, but his Swamp Things are cool, and the Watchmen series... Who is John Galt? |

The Amazing Spider Man issues 121-122, June-July 1973 (the death of gwen Stacy if you don;t know... there's a graphic novel of the whole saga out there now... go get it!) the re-release of the She Hulk book in the 80's when she started breaking the fourth wall and talking to the readers and the artists....i remember her saying: "Okay, this is your last chance. If you don't buy my book this time, i'm gonna come to your house and rip up all your X-Men." The Midnight Massacre series that ran through nightstalkers, darkhold, ghost rider, morbius, and the last one i forget.... but that was the start of the Midnight Sons... Maximum Carnage...all spidey fans loved it. it got its own video game =) Fantastic Four vs. the New Fantastic Four...wolvie took off Thing's face....bad times. an obscure issue of spiderman in which he dies and fights thanos for the life of a lil girl he was tryin to save...goo issue. the McFarlane age of "Spider-Man"....it's todd! nuff said. The Infinity Gaunlet: the battle was cosmos-shaking. loved it. Spider-Man:The Venom Factor...it's a novel actually... but it's damn good. SpiderMan 200th anniversary issue... can't recall the year at this point and i'm on vacation without my comics.... but it's the one where Green Goblin (osborn's kid) saves MJ and Spidey...after that he got his own (shortlived) book as a hero. The Maxx was so cool.... and i know i'm turning on Marvel Comics with this one, but the Death of Superman Saga was pretty sweet. (not just saying that cause i don't like the guy) and of course, Marvel vs. DC.... we've been waitin for that ever since Spidey took on superman in the sixties...(Spidey vs. Supes...that's all politics and popularity man...hulk woulda gave him a run for his money...spidey? that's just unfair.) and unlike the giant size 64-page battle between the two in red an blue in the 60's, marvel vs. DC spanned 4 books and the ensuing Amalgam series. *drools* i think i've established my nerd-ness and i will retreat before i fill the forum with this..... I used to be big into comics, well Spawn until the movie….it was bad, really bad then Mr. McFarlane’s literally lost the plot. But Spawn in its glory days was a great read. My favourite graphic novel has to be “Watchmen” from the pen of Alan Moore, Sinply the best story on superheroes, this one digs deep. Great story and a real page turner. If anyone thinks that comics/graphic novels are for kids read this. Second would be “batman returns” by Frank Miller, Bruce Wayne turns 40, has given up being Batman but finds himself donning the cape again. A great read spoiled by some plot loop holes, the mutants story could have been better written. Killing Joke by Alan Moore. It explores the relationship between Batman and the Joker. The X-men, Xavier’s song. Some of the x-men comics, the cross-overs and two to three titles a month make it too expensive to follow. A pity. And Sand Man. . Lastly there was a batman comic, don’t think I still have it, where Batman visits a man who trained him, He shows Batman through this door that leads into Batman’s subconscious where he goes through various scenarios that force him to deal with the darker areas of his soul. A great read, don’t think I have it anymore though. Too early for the rainbow, too early for the dove These are the final days, this is the darkness, this is the flood |
