The worst Poetry is written by Elizabeth or comes from her pen.... Sorry Sven I couldn't resist that! ![]() Seriously though, I don't like it when the descriptive words the author uses doesn't make sense. I may love the poem, but sometimes can't understand parts of it! Edited to say this: that doesn't mean it's a bad poem. I was just stating my opinion, but this is not the best thread to do it in I guess. [This message has been edited by Elizabeth (edited 02-13-2001).] |

I didn't say it was the worst. I just said I didn't like that part of it. There have been poems with parts I don't understand (I even asked my mom what some of the phrases meant and she didn't understand them either), but I didn't say that made it a bad poem. |

wait a minute Ali. . . what's wrong with cummings?? or for that matter, "experimental" poetry?? I mean, sure it's hard to understand. . . but, perhaps it's all in our minds. . . and sure, sometimes it looks like the poet just threw it up there and called it a poem. . . but doesn't it still have merit as a poem?? Just wondering. . . this is a great discussion!!! -------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |

The worst poetry, in my opinion, comes from overtinkering with the basic concept of the poem, leaving it a corrupted badstart of the poem you were intending to write. Don't get me wrong, Sven. Over the years, I've read a lot of cummings. Just don't care for his style. Then there's MacLeish, who I've also read, but grew tired of the same format, poem after poem. I guess that's what's it, at the root: style. |

The worst poetry is a poem that says what has already been written. The worst poetry comes from nothing but sincerity. Brad |

It's a paraphrase from Oscar Wilde: "All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling. To be natural is to be obvious, and to obvious is to be inartistic." I think what he means is that it lacks subtlety. Notice that he doesn't argue whether good poetry should or should not be genuine. Brad [This message has been edited by Brad (edited 02-14-2001).] |

Ok, Bad poetry? Yes and No. I'll start with no. Reason:...... I don't think it's fair to say one way or another if poetry is bad. It's a matter of one's opinion! Who's writen it... What are they writing about.... etc etc. Then there is the rhyme, meter etc, that some people use to judge a poem with. Ok, that's fair I guess, but did the reader focus more on weather it flowed well or not, or did they really "read" the piece, pick up what the author was trying to convey? I have to agree with Sharon o this one.... What one person likes, another may hate and so on. Ok, as far as yes goes: This is just MY personal opinion. I've read poetry that I had no idea what the athor was talking about. I've read poetry that made no sense what so ever. The poems that are choppy and jump around a lot..... Then again, maybe that was the authors intention!.... So, who am I to judge one's poetry? I'm not, not at all. The only time I will say a poem is BAD, is if it glorifies something aweful and hidious! Like murder or rape. I call that BAD! So Sven, to answer your question.....For the most part...NO! ~Sheri "The things that come to those that wait may be the things left by those who got there first" |

i HATE MY POETRY!!but keep writing it because i come up with cool phrases and lines.lol. i mean i swear i come up with some great really stunning phrases but that's ALL i have,i never have enuf wit to fill the whole poem with good stuff. So you have one good line and the rest is just absolute trash, and i hate that, but oh vell i know i'm not a poet and i cope..lol.. also i HATE it when rhyme becomes prison,i hate reading poems where you know someone's trying to say something, but the rhyme is tripping them up and they end up sticking stupid words in there for the sake of the rhyme. i have learned my lesson well, rhyme can be a stumbling block,i now hardly ever attempt rhyme. On the other had, having to rhyme is like a higher plateau,i have read such good rhyming poetry in here and it amazes me so!!!!!WOW :! and just to add a contrary opinion.....i ADORE poetry that makes no sense,i love nonesense poetry,it's like looking in someone's head and following their strea of thought, you really have to sit down and analyze and hypothesize.....so experimental poetry is a mega on my list of cool stuff!! sam |

I don't think glorifying something bad or hideous makes a poem bad, because we all have different moral viewpoints. If someone can write something artistic and beautiful that just happens to glorify rape, then I will respect that poem for a) being artistic and beautiful and b) utilizing our right to free speech. Now... To me, bad poetry is when you read a poem and yawn- when you're not tired in the first place. Or when you read the first two lines and say "oh, it's one of THOSE (insert subject) poems" and even though I'm making a big blanket statement, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought that. You are more than the sum of what you consume |

I wouldn't say any poetry is bad, even if I don't like it! Now there is plenty I don't like, I think right now, it irritates me to look at nearly any poetry book on the shelves and see the same long winded, free form on and on and on stuff. And I'm sure that made little sense but I know just what I mean. An exception, I just picked up a book by Kim Addonizio, "Tell Me", which is in that style that irritates me for some reason, but she was so amazingly good that the style didn't matter. OK, I'm leaving now Sandra (did I say long winded?) |

"Poetry" which is written soley to disrespect the poetry of others, or that would chastise others for not disentangling the poetry of the chastiser. I've written such drivel myself. (not here ![]() "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve" |

The worst Poetry is the most common and comes from lazy thinking. But it all serves its purpose. Everyone's a bad poet before they become a good poet -- or a great one. And it's also highly subjective. Just because I think The Wasteland is great, others might find it self-involved tripe. Mike |
