        Going Home
    A Soldier's Final Rest

We brought you home to bury you
in this place where you were born.
In a casket carried by soldiers,
tear stained and flower adorned.

We brought you home to leave you
in these mountains you adore,
in this precious place of rest,
where your spirit can forever soar.

We said good-bye while crying,
hearts full of pain, all broken.
Precious memories mixed with tears,
so many words were left unspoken!

I tried to say good-bye that day
as they lowered you in the ground.
My pain formed a tortured moan,
yet was hardly an audible sound.

A misty rain surrounded us,
it seemed the mountains cried that day.
Raindrops mixed with my tears,
while I tried in vain to pray.

My lips were cold and numb,
unable to move and form words.
My body racked with pain,
stabbing pains, like searing swords.

Leaving the cemetery and closing the gate,
I fought the urge to turn and run back,
to throw myself upon your grave, as if
holding you might somehow bring you back.

I left you on the mountain that day,
but I never let your memory go.
I left my heart on the mountain that day,
my heart that will always miss you so.

                        One of my older poems.
                          Any input appreciated
