A poem about the number One...or is it? (-: (I'm a math teacher, ok! -- See if you can catch all the "math" metaphors, haha) ---------------------------------------------------- 5/18/03 Uno Being One is wonderful! I may be small, But therein lies my strength I am a building block, a starting point for all the rest The strength in numbers begins with me Forever misunderstood by those who think me prime; but I am my only divisor, you cannot break me down You try to square me, but I hold true to myself You try to turn me upside down, but I stand tall, pointing to the sky You try to root me, but I stay firmly planted You try to raise me, but your power cannot change me They call me the identity, I help others find themselves With my power, I offer a mirror But I remain a mystery I am proud, I wear my confidence like a badge ā my given name is āIā I am whole, indivisible, and strong in my simplicity I am One ā and One is Wonderful! Clever. Not a math whiz though, so I'm glad someone was around to explain it. Then, on rereading it, I enjoyed it even more. Sid |

Hi Sid Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it...and that you had someone to help "interpret" for you! I think it definitely makes a difference if the reader understands the metaphors, or else I assume the reader won't enjoy it as much, and simply regard it as a poem about someone's life (the other meaning of the poem). Thanks again for your comments! Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end... |

Your "other meaning" is exactly what I'd read into it at first. And, while an interpretation helps, that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of this--or any other particular poem. Sometimes, it's nice to be able to reread and see something new; something that didn't make sense before, now becoming more clear. That's part of the fun of poetry. Sid |
