MORPHINE DREAMS

The Yankees beat the Red Sox for the umpty-seventh time,
Except they do it in my bedroom to the chant of nurse-call chimes.
Out there in the hallway, Spanish girls line up and do their best
To sell Explorers, Escalades and Tahoes by showing off their breasts.
The vagrant from the Men’s room steals my Jello, spills my juice,
The bugger wears a doctor suit, a talking nametag and a noose.
This mountain cabin has no heat,  just thin white VA towels
That come and go at random, taking pieces of my bowels.
The television talks to me and sometimes I talk back.
I can dodge the jungle bullets, though my guts are shred by flak.
But Oh, the blessed morphine, how it takes away the pain,
And so I push the button for a hit, again, again, again!
I’m higher than a dragon kite with fifty feet of red/gold tail,
Bars surround me.  There are warders.  This is jail.

Jimbeaux

Well, I ain't dead yet, although there have been a few days when that seemed like a reasonable alternative.  I lost the rest of my large intestine to cancer -- I knew I was sick, I also know I'm stupid not to admit to myself just how sick.  So now I have an ileostomy instead of a colostomy.  Same old bag, different site.  Recovery will be long and unpleasant on this one, as my stem-to-stern surgery infected, the stitches had to be pulled, and this wound, the size of a decent watermelon wedge, will have to heal from the inside out.  The "good" news is wife Deb and I now have adjoining hospital beds in our livingroom.  It encourages conversation.

I apologize for taking on more than I could handle with the mentoring thing.  Glad to see Moonbeam has picked up on it.  Hope all realize the amount of effort Moonbeam is putting in.  Fantastic!

THREE last things: 1. I advise against major surgery as an excuse for getting high.

2.  SAMPO:  THIS IS LIGHT VERSE.

3.  I've got about two hours of energy a day.  I'm around, but I may not be prolific.

Love you all, Jim Aitken

Well Jim, I can't imagine what you're going through. Though I've had enough surgery to recognize your morphine dreams! That was a fun read. I pray you recover soon, both of you. Here's to courage, strength and peace.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

I would hug you if it didn't hurt you.

Well, these don't hurt.

Lawsy but it's good to have you back!

(and I'd address your poem, but I am skittish now.)

But I am relieved to read something in modern language.

Oh..and one for Deb, too!

Light verse?
What is this thing of which you speak?
Not like light beer is it?
Cause I don't touch that stuff.

- talking nametag. Heh.

Keep snuffing awhile.
Drugs are underrated in terms
of artistic output.

Well, that just sounded inaccurate
typing it.

Glad to see you're back.
Hope you're fully on the mend.

Regards,

sampo.

Hi Sampo, and thanks for kind words.  I enjoy "tweaking" you once in a while because, ah, you've been known to miss my occasional joke.

Ancient Chinese aphorism which I just made up:  "Light verse is to poetry as razors are to guillotines."

Great to see your sense of humor come through.

Best, Jim
