Down from the deep sky the swift warriors ride, Mounting on clouds over chill northern tide. Riding the mists to the Emerald isle Wheeling down rank on rank in double file. Grim soldiers riding the wild north-wind fly Sailing o’er land and sea through red-rimmed sky Tangled sea tosses its long wave-worn hair. At the sight of the bold fire-lance warriors of air. Children born of green-browed Queen On to the land of the dour Firbolgs ween. |

The Tuatha de Danaan are figures in Irish mythology. They were thought to have come to the island riding clouds from the north and to have displaced the Firbolgs who were the earlier inhabitants, only to themselves have been displaced by the Milesians, who were seen as the ancestors of the modern Irish. Legend has it that they retreated into the ground and became a part of the sidhe, fairy folk, but that they come forth again to fight in a just cause wearing white helmets and bearing lances of blue flame. I was intrigued by the myth, and so wrote this poem. |
